CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (February 9, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team, ranked No. 11 by the AVCA, completed a perfect United Volleyball Conference weekend with a five-set victory over 15th-ranked Medaille College on Sunday at MIT.
In the final crossover match of the weekend, Stevens (4-3, 3-1) tallied set one and two wins by scores of 25-18, 25-21, but fell in the next two games, 27-25, 25-20. The Ducks prevailed in the match over Medaille, 15-11, in the final set of the match for their third consecutive victory of the season.
Both teams hit at a similar percentage, .228 to .212, in favor of Stevens. The Ducks used 12 total blocks and six service aces compared to six blocks and two aces from the Mavericks, which proved to be a difference in the match.
Stevens was led offensively by a career-high 23 kills on 41 swings (.439 hitting percentage) from freshman
Gabe Shankweiler (Allentown, Pa.). Shankweiler also added five digs, five blocks and two aces.
Junior
Daniel Smith (Tucson, Ariz.) committed no hitting errors in 22 attempts with 13 kills for a .591 hitting percentage which was a match-best. Smith chipped in seven blocks as well. Classmate
Kevin Aeckerle (Henrietta, N.Y.) handed out 51 assists in the win to go along with 14 digs, both were match-highs.
Sophomore
Chris Vaughan (Medford, N.J.) recorded his sixth double-digit kills effort of the season with 12 and tallied eight digs. Junior
Dylan Schlosser (Emmaus, Pa.) registered 11 digs from the back row. Freshman
John Eddins (Kula, Hawaii) dished out eight assists in three sets.
Stevens heads to Vassar College for another UVC contest on February 12 at 7 p.m. The Ducks will then host No. 11 Stevenson University and Hunter College for a tri-match on the 15th beginning at 11 a.m.
