No. 10 Men’s Volleyball Wins Home Finale over No. 11 Baruch

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 23, 2014) – The nationally ranked No. 10 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team toppled No. 11 Baruch College in four sets on Sunday in the team's final home match of the season.

Stevens (14-7) breezed to victory over Baruch (20-8) in its three set triumphs by scores of 25-15, 25-16, 25-15, but dropped the second set, 25-17. The Ducks used nine total blocks, eight service aces and a .243 hitting percentage, while the Bearcats hit at just a .105 clip and recorded only one ace. Baruch also committed 14 service errors.

In the first set, freshman Gabe Shankweiler (Allentown, Pa.) tallied six of his match-high 13 kills. Sophomore Chris Vaughan (Medford, N.J.) also shined in the opening set with five digs, three aces and a pair of kills as part of his 11-kill and 11-dig effort. Vaughan also finished the match with four aces and hit .476 overall. Stevens outhit Baruch, .276 to -.032 in set one.

The Ducks never led in set two and were down by as much as nine at an 18-9 deficit before attempting a late comeback to 18-13 on kills from sophomore Thomas Wright (La Mesa, Calif.) and freshman Jordan Stuart (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and an ace by junior Daniel Smith (Tucson, Ariz.). After Baruch called a timeout, the Bearcats closed out the set on a 7-3 run to even the match.

Stevens jumped out to a 5-0 edge in the third set and cruised to the 25-16 win. Smith ended the set on back-to-back aces and finished the match with a .500 hitting percentage, nine kills, three aces and four blocks.

The Ducks also never trailed in the fourth set to secure the victory. Vaughan put down three kills over the first 10 points of the set.

Junior Kevin Aeckerle (Henrietta, N.Y.) handed out 38 assists to lead all players and added six digs. Classmate Dylan Schlosser (Emmaus, Pa.) chipped in 10 digs with four assists, while sophomore John Eddins (Kula Hawaii) tallied four kills on a .400 hitting clip in two sets played.

The Ducks head to Ramapo College for their next match on March 26 at 6 p.m. Stevens will then play a tri-match at Cairn University on the 29th before traveling to Springfield College on April 4 and 5 for a tournament to conclude the regular season.
