No. 7 Men’s Volleyball Handles Dominican in Four Sets

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 4, 2014) – The nationally ranked No. 7 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team scored a four-set victory over Dominican University (Ill.) on Wednesday evening in Walker Gymnasium. With the win, Stevens is now 11-5 on the season, while Dominican drops to 7-9.

Stevens claimed the victory by set scores of 25-19, 25-18, 25-27, 25-21. Dominican took on No. 15 New York University prior to its match with Stevens and lost, 25-22, 35-33, 26-24.

In the first set victory for Stevens, the Ducks hit .391 overall with 14 kills on 23 attempts and just two errors. Dominican was held to a .083 hitting percentage (9K-7E-24A). Stevens also recorded four total blocks.

Freshman Gabe Shankweiler (Allentown, Pa.) put down five kills in the opening set on a .571 hitting clip, while sophomore Derrick Sokol (Newbury Park, Calif.) took three swings in the set and tallied three kills.

Junior Kevin Aeckerle (Henrietta, N.Y.) handed out 10 assists with four digs in the set, and classmate Daniel Smith (Tucson, Ariz.) added two kills and two service aces.

Stevens began the second set on a 5-0 run and led by as many as 11 points at 21-10 in the 25-18 win. The Ducks once again performed well offensively, hitting .387 with 14 kills and just two errors on 31 swings.

Smith put together the best set for Stevens with three kills and a .600 hitting percentage, two more aces and two blocks. Aeckerle dished out nine more assists with four digs, both were tops in the set for Stevens.

Sophomore Chris Vaughan (Medford, N.J.) contributed four kills and hit at a .375 clip with two aces, while Shankweiler totaled three digs and two kills.

Junior Dylan Schlosser (Emmaus, Pa.) picked up four digs from the back row in set two.

Dominican answered in the third set with a 27-25 victory and outhit Stevens for the first time in the match, .255 to .238. Both teams registered 17 kills, but the Stars committed two fewer errors on five more attempts.

Shankweiler added to his night with six more kills in the third set defeat. Vaughan tallied five more kills and hit .375 with four digs, while Smith chipped in four kills at a .375 clip.

Aeckerle amassed 15 assists in set three to go along with five more digs. Sokol added five digs and a solo block.

In the clincher, Shankweiler, Smith and Vaughan all posted five kills. Smith hit .625 with two blocks, Shankweiler swung as a .444 clip to go along with three digs and Vaughan also picked up three digs with a .300 hitting percentage.

Aeckerle capped off his stellar evening with 16 more assists and three digs, while Sokol added four more blocks.

Overall, Shankweiler and Vaughan each tallied 17 kills to tie for a match-high. Shankweiler also finished with nine digs, while Vaughan added seven digs, three assists, two blocks and two aces.

Smith wrapped up the match with a .565 hitting percentage with 14 kills on 23 swings and just one error. He also collected four aces and five blocks.

Aeckerle finished with a double-double on 49 assists and 16 digs, while Sokol put down seven kills with nine digs and seven total blocks.

The Ducks head to Elmira College this weekend for the final United Volleyball Conference Crossover on March 8 and 9. Stevens opens with D'Youville College at 11 a.m. on the 8th and then played No. 9 Nazareth College (1 p.m.) and No. 12 Elmira (3 p.m.) on the 9th.
