ELMIRA, N.Y. (March 8, 2014) – The nationally ranked No. 7 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team split a pair of United Volleyball Conference matches at Elmira College on Saturday. Stevens swept D'Youville College but fell to No. 12 Elmira in the second contest of the day.
The Ducks (12-6, 6-3) breezed past D'Youville (2-12, 0-7), 25-9, 25-12, 25-14, to open the crossover. Steven then dropped a tough four-set match up with Elmira (13-6, 4-3), 25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 29-27.
Stevens 3, D'Youville 0
Sophomore
Chris Vaughan (Medford, N.J.) tallied 10 kills and a .389 hitting percentage as he was the lone player in the match to surpass double-digit kills. Vaughan also added six digs and three blocks. Junior
Daniel Smith (Tucson, Ariz.) recorded six kills on 10 swings to go along with four total blocks.
Fellow sophomores
John Eddins (Kula, Hawaii) and
Derrick Sokol (Newbury Park, Calif.) registered 16 assists and five kills, respectively. Both finished with a pair of digs, while Sokol chipped in three blocks and Eddins had two.
Junior
Kevin Aeckerle (Henrietta, N.Y.) handed out nine assists with three digs, while freshman
Gabe Shankweilier (Allentown, Pa.) contributed four kills, four digs and four blocks. Junior
Dylan Schlosser (Emmaus, Pa.) posted a team-best 10 digs.
In all, Stevens finished the match with 14 total blocks. D'Youville hit -.139 in the contest and committed 25 attack errors to just 14 kills.
Elmira 3, Stevens 1
Vaughan once again paced the Ducks with 18 kills in the loss to Elmira and added nine digs and four blocks. Shankweiler registered 11 more kills and nine digs.
Aeckerle dished out 42 assists in the setback, while Smith put down nine kills on a .438 hitting percentage to go along with five blocks.
Sophomore
Alexander Carpenter (Delaware, Ohio) added seven kills, while Schlosser recorded 11 digs. Sokol finished the day with 10 digs and three blocks.
