Women’s Tennis Set For E8 Championship

HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 13, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team will chase its first ever Empire 8 title this weekend when it takes the courts for the 2016 conference championship.

CHAMPIONSHIP INFO
Stevens earned the second seed by virtue of an 8-1 conference record, and will take on third-seeded Nazareth in the semifinal round. The winner will battle the victor of top-seeded Ithaca, and fourth-seeded Hartwick.

Stevens' semifinal match is scheduled for Friday at 1 p.m., with Saturday's final slated for 10:30 a.m.

DUCKS VS. THE FIELD
Stevens opened its season with a 6-3 win over Naz, before topping Hartwick in Hoboken earlier this month, 8-1. Stevens' only blemish of the season came in a 7-2 loss to Ithaca.

HOW THEY GOT HERE
Stevens won its seven conference matches by a combined margin of 55-8, including three different shutouts.

HISTORY LESSON
Stevens has made the E8 final each of the last two seasons, and six of the last seven. Each loss has come to Ithaca, who's won 11 in-a-row.

IT STARTS AT DOUBLES
Keying Stevens' success this fall has been its dominance at doubles, which the team has taken at least two of three in all eight wins. Junior Katrina Guido and sophomore Sydney Zoretic led the Ducks with an undefeated 7-0 mark, while sophomores Julia Earl and Jill Hadwen went 8-1.

UNBEATEN
Senior Jillian Morneau completed a perfect season at singles with a win over Elmira last weekend. Morneau competed at fourth, fifth and sixth for the Ducks this fall.

WHAT A DEBUT
Freshman Isabella Calandra went 8-1 for the Ducks at singles this season in her first season on Castle Point. The rookie went a combined 6-0 at third and fourth, and teamed with senior Alexis Connor to go 6-3 at first doubles.

NO. 1 DUCK
In addition to her leadership off the court, Connor served as the Ducks top option at both singles and doubles all season.
