HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 16, 2016) – The No. 21 Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team swept all six singles matches Saturday in a 7-2 victory over No. 27 Christopher Newport University in Hoboken.
The win moved Stevens' record to 11-7, while Christopher Newport fell to 12-7. The win was the fourth of the season for the Ducks over an ITA top-40 team.
Seniors
Matthew Heinrich and
Ben Foran gave the Ducks the early lead with an 8-3 win at first doubles, but Christopher Newport responded by taking wins at second and third to take the 2-1 lead.
The win was the 11th of the season for the Stevens doubles aces, and second in-a-row.
The wins would be the last for Christopher Newport in the match however as Heinrich tied the score with a straight-set win at first singles, followed by straight-set wins at third and fourth for junior
Charles Drake and Foran.
Sophomore
Danny Polk clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-3 win at second, before junior
Michael Feldman won his match at fifth, 6-1, 6-2. Freshman
Kyle Cenderelli dropped his second set at fifth after a first set win, but rebounded in the third with a 10-7 tiebreaker victory.
The wins for Foran and Drake were their ninth and eighth respectively, while Polk's victory extended his singles win steak to five.
The Ducks will return to Empire 8 Conference play next weekend with road matches against St. John Fisher College and Nazareth College.
