Sweep of Elmira sends Women's Tennis to eighth straight win

  • Short Story: The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team earned its eighth consecutive victory with a 9-0 sweep of Elmira College Saturday to close out regular season play.
  • The records: Stevens: 8-1; 7-1 (Empire 8); Elmira: 2-9; 1-6 (Empire 8) 
  • Of note: The victory secured the No. 2 seed for Stevens in the upcoming Empire 8 Conference Championship. 
  • Also worth noting: Today's victory extended Stevens' winning streak versus Elmira to four. The Ducks hold a 10-1 edge in the series.
    
How It Happened
  • Victories in all three doubles flights gave the Ducks and 3-0 lead.
  • Stevens dropped only six points in the three doubles matches to seize control of the match.
  • The freshman tandem of Chelsea Braithwaite and Makenna Sargis opened the match scoring with an 8-1 victory over Eliza Johnson and Cassie Brown.
  • Sophomores Julia Earl and reigning Empire 8 Conference Player of the Week Isabella Calandra again earned a victory at No. 1 doubles, downing Elmira's Megan Fitzgerald and Katy Jewett, 8-2.
  • Junior Sydney Zoretic and sophomore Nicole Badalyan completed the sweep with an 8-3 win at third doubles.
  • It was the first time in 10 matches that Elmira failed to secure at least one point in the doubles flights.
  • Braithwaite and Sargis gave the Ducks the match with shutouts at No. 4 and 5 singles.
  • Junior Victoria Piskarev joined Calandra, Earl and sophomore Joilin Gomez in earning singles wins.
  • Earl's contest with Fitzgerald at No. 1 singles was the only flight on the afternoon that reached a third set. The Sparta, New Jersey rebounded after dropping the first set to secure a 3-6 6-1, 10-5 win.
  • The Ducks handed Elmira its first shutout of the season.
