NEW YORK, N.Y. (November 13, 2017) – The Stevens Institute of Technology fencing teams took on New York University in a gala Monday matchup with the rival Violets. The women earned a gritty 15-12 victory while the men dropped their decision.
For the women, all three Stevens weapons groups won 5-4 as the evenly-matched sides went down to the wire. At foil,
Abby Kaye and
Allison Urban-Spillane both went 2-1. At sabre,
Karen Kong and
Michelle Drobish did the same and
Julie McEldoon also led that squad with a 2-1 mark on the night.
"The event tonight was run like the old-time fencing matches, where coaches and refs wore tuxes and black tie attire," said head coach
Linda Vollkommer-Lynch. "There were a lot of dignitaries present and there was a demonstration by an Olympic fencer. It was fun."
The men's team had a little more trouble, falling 21-6.
Leonard Behrens was the top performer, going 2-1 in Epee. Also in Epee,
Noah Scott was 1-0 and
Kirk Visser won a bout.
Senior captain
Michael Ruotolo earned a foil win and the lone victory in sabre belonged to freshman
Eric Sang.
"The guys fought hard, but this team has many of the top-rated fencers in the country," said head coach
Jim Carpenter. "Hats off to a very tough NYU team."
Both teams will be back in action this weekend at the Columbia University Duals.
