WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (October 13, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team wrapped up their fall schedule in impressive fashion at the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) individual championships on Sunday. The Ducks claimed all seven singles titles and doubles titles, only the second program to accomplish the feat since the format change in 2005. Wilkes University is the only other program to sweep the individual championships, they did it back in 2015 and 2017.
"This weekend was a great way to finish our fall season. For our guys to walk away with a gold medal in each and every singles and doubles flight is an impressive feat," expressed head coach
Steve Gachko. "Winning is always a great boost for our confidence and this will hopefully help us to continue to grow together as a team and make positive strides to become a stronger team next season."
Singles Competition
Stevens began the day with seven players just two wins away from the program's first singles championship. The Ducks kept their winning ways rolling on day two and swept the singles flights.
Sophomore
Marc Feliu, junior
Keegan Morris, and junior
Mark Kanevsky were the first Stevens players to strike gold on Sunday. The trio all finished the weekend with a 3-0 on record and did not drop a single set.
Marc Feliu topped King's Tyler Millan in the No. 1 singles championship final 6-1, 6-4 to secure the first singles title on the day.
Keegan Morris posted two straight-set wins and defeated Stevenson's Ray McDermott 6-0, 6-1 to win the second singles flight title.
Mark Kanevsky secured two 6-0, 6-1 wins to win the third title of the day for the Ducks, Kanevsky bested Nick Balaci of Lebanon Valley in the No. 3 championship finals.
Stevens final quartet of players completed the sweep in singles play thanks to some excellent play on the courts. Freshman Philip Szkurdlarski, junior
Gabriel Sifuentes, sophomore
Arjun Krishnan, and sophomore
Eloi Pradier finished on top of podium in their respective brackets on Sunday. Each player recorded two straight-set wins, only dropped a total of seven games and defeated a player from Lebanon Valley. The Dutchmen finished with five runner-up finishes in singles and one in doubles.
Doubles Competition
Stevens kept it rolling in doubles play as they moved all four pairings into the championship finals. The tandem of Feliu and Morris bested number three seed Justin Schuetz and Blake Martin of Lebanon Valley, 8-1 to claim the No. 1 doubles championship.
Sifuentes and Szkudlarski registered an 8-4 win in semifinals to set up a match up with unseeded Keith Rader and Drake Hanak of Arcadia. The duo would not be denied in their quest for a championship and defeated Hanak and Rader, 8-1 to earn the No. 2 doubles title.
The final two doubles pairings for the Ducks put an exclamation point on the weekends performance by completing the doubles sweep. Kanevsky and Krishnan blanked Wilkes Larry Scartz and Isaac Shenton, 8-0 to claim the third doubles title of the day. Kincaid and Li bested AJ Swanson and Connor Rose from Messiah to claim the No. 4 doubles championship and completed the Ducks title sweep.
Up Next: The MAC individual championships wrapped up men's tennis' fall schedule. Stevens returns to the court in the spring, when the Ducks head down to Fredericksburg again for the Mary Washington Invitational on February 22, 2020.
