The Basics
  • The lead: Three runners placed inside the top-15 as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's cross country team finished second Saturday at the 2019 Suffolk Invite, hosted by Suffolk University.
  • Location: Franklin Park - Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts
  • Short Story: Using a 6:26 mile pace, sophomore Trinity Lundemo completed the five-kilometer course in 19:59.8 to lead Stevens' eight-runner contingent. Lundemo finished sixth out of 202 runners. Suffolk's Emily Manfra won the race by over 48 seconds over Smith's Karena Garcia. Smith won the overall team title, compiling 40 points. The Ducks received a cowbell in recognition of their second-place finish with 89 points.
  • Of note: Founded in 1885, Franklin Park has been the home for cross country in the greater New England area since 1914. The course is home to the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship every other year and also hosted the IAAF World Cross Country Championship in 1982.
  • Also of note: The race was the final race of the regular season.

Top Finishers
  • Junior Kristin McAtee was the second Duck to reach the finish in the team's second five-kilometer race of the season. The Wayne, New Jersey native crossed the line in 20:11.9, finishing ninth.

Harden's Thoughts
  • "Suffolk hosted the meet at historic Franklin Park, where there have been cross country races since 1914. The course was in great condition and has a nice mix of grass, gravel, packed dirt, hills, and flat sections. We competed in the afternoon under sunny skies and comfortable temperatures in the high 50's. There was no significant wind and the footing was firm."
  • "This was our final tune-up meet prior to the MAC Championships in two weeks. We faced a smattering of New England schools in a similarly sized meet to the MAC Champs and I thought that our team did a great job of competing well throughout the race. We were more focused on place than time and our athletes continued to pass opponents and improve their placings over the second half of the race."
  • "The women raced the 5K distance for the first time in six weeks. We got out aggressively with our top four coming through the one-mile split around 6:05-6:10 and 30th place. Rachel Pinho led the way initially and Trinity Lundemo gradually reeled her in by the 1 Mile, the two of them worked together up the Bear Cage Hill, and then Trinity moved up on her own over the second half of the race. Similarly, Kristin McAtee worked her way up to Erin Miceli by the 1 Mile, they raced as a pair up the hill, and then Kristin took off on the downhill and continually picked off runners over the second half of the race."
  • "Caroline Corr had a fantastic race for us as our fifth scoring runner, staying engaged for the entirety of the race and securing our team's second place finish. She has closed the gap on our top runners and become a consistent, reliable racer."
  • "Today also marked the first cross country race for Brea Veilleux since November 11, 2017. She got to race in her native New England in front of her parents, and we are excited to have her back!"

Up Next
  • After a two-week layoff, women's cross country returns to the course on Saturday, Nov. 2 for the MAC Championships, hosted by Hood College at Utica District Park.
