FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (October 4, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team opened play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic South Regional Championship on Friday. Sophomore
Marc Feliu and junior
Keegan Morris advanced to the round of 16 in the Championships' doubles bracket to lead the Ducks on day one.
Marc Feliu also recorded two wins in singles competition to advance to the round of 16 in the Championships' singles bracket. Sophomore
Garrett Kincaid went 1-0 on the day to advance to the quarterfinals in the 'B4 Singles' bracket. The three-day tournament is being held at the University of Mary Washington's Tennis Center. Stevens received their draws on Thursday and five players put their skills to the test against a competitive tournament field.
Singles Competition
Five different individuals competed in singles competition today in three different brackets.
Marc Feliu,
Keegan Morris, and freshman
Philip Szkudlarski represented Stevens in the Championships' singles bracket. Morris failed to advance in the bracket after dropping his round of 64 match, 6-1, 6-1 to John Hopkins University's' Vishnu Joshi. Szkudlarski dropped his opening round bout in his first ITA Regional appearance, losing to Carnegie Mellon University's' Revanth "Ray" Boppana 6-0, 6-0.
Marc Feliu recorded the first singles win of the day for the Ducks, he got pass University of Mary Washington's' Michael Fleming in three-sets 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. The Barcelona, Spain native found himself in a competitive match with Noah Criss of Swarthmore in the round of 32. Feliu dug deep to take the first set in tiebreaker 7-6 (4) and posted a convincing 6-2 win in set two over Criss to advance to the round of 16.
Marc Feliu will face Harry Shepherd of Washington & Lee in the next round on Saturday morning at 11:45 a.m.
Sophomore
Eloi Pradier was was the team's lone entry in the 'B2 Singles' bracket, Pradier faced Evan Brady of Washington and Lee University in the round of 16. Pradier came up short against Brady in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 to end his run on the championship side of the bracket.
Sophomore
Garrett Kincaid was the final singles player in action on Friday. Kincaid took on Hampden-Sydney College's Grayson Burns in rhe round of 16 in the 'B4 Singles' bracket. The Leawood, Kansas native bested Burns 6-4, 7-5 (10-2) to advance to the quarterfinals. Kincaid will play Omosesan Adebamgbe of Goucher College on Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. for a spot in the semi-finals.
Doubles Competition
Two doubles teams represented Stevens on Friday in the Championships' doubles bracket.
Marc Feliu and
Keegan Morris are meshing well in their first year of competition paired together. The tandem received a bye in the opening round and faced Carnegie Mellon's Edward Chen and Matthew Poh in the round of 32. Feliu and Morris defeated Chen and Poh 8-4 to advance to the round of 16 where they will face Christopher Newport University's' James Baron and Andy Mason.
Garrett Kincaid and
Philip Szkudlarski were the other doubles team that took the courts on Friday. The duo fell in their round of 64 match up to Carnegie Mellon's Raahil Doshi and Joshua Pinckney 8-4. Up Next: Day two of the ITA Atlantic South Regional Championships will start with doubles competition and be directly followed by singles action. Round of 16 and quarterfinal matches will take place on Saturday in the Championship brackets.
