Evan Kainer captured the individual title in the decathlon, classmate
Alex Kainer won the 200-meter dash and junior
Nicholas DiMaria took first in the 400-meter dash to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology men's outdoor track and field team to fifth place at the All-Atlantic Region Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
After totaling 3,476 points over the first five events, Kainer totaled 2,723 points over the final five events, including personal bests in three different disciplines, to compile a career-best 6,199 points. The South Brunswick, New Jersey native began his day with a personal-best time of 16.30 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles and followed up his second-place finish with a time of 5:19.31 in the 1,500. Kainer reached 31.47 meters on his third toss to set a PR in the discus to finish third. He recorded his third PR of the day in the pole vault, reaching 3.80 meters to finish second and close the event by placing third in the javelin. Competing in his final collegiate event, Kainer bested his previous career best by 287 points.
Kainer posted a PR in the 200 to top the 21-runner field to capture the regional title. Running into a headwind, Kainer finished with a time of 21.52 seconds. The South Brunswick, New Jersey native edged Stevenson's Kendall Belser by 35 hundredths-of-a-second. DiMaria placed fourth, winning his heat in a time of 21.94 seconds.
DiMaria earned an individual title of his own, topping the 19-runner field in the 400 with a time of 48.92 seconds.
Collectively, Stevens finished fifth out of 41 teams, totaling 47 points. Brockport won the team title, compiling 76.5 points to edge Rowan by a single point. Hosting SUNY Cortland finished third with 71 points, followed by Stevenson (50), with the Ducks rounding out the top five.
The Ducks also had a strong showing in the 4x100, placing third out of 15 teams. Sophomore
Danny LaMastra joined DiMaria and Evan and
Alex Kainer to reach the finish in a time of 41.58 seconds.Â
Junior Dan Kaba earned a pair of top-10 finishes to contribute to the team scores. The Jackson, New Jersey native finished eighth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.14 seconds and then earned his second eighth-place finish of the day in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.47 seconds. After setting a personal best in the 110-meter hurdle preliminaries, Kaba set a new PR in the 400-meter hurdles in the championship race.
Junior
Max McCauley competed in the discus, reaching 40.94 meters on his final attempt to place 12th. LaMastra finished 20th with a distance of 6.45 meters in the long jump to round out Stevens' competitors.
