Sot Wins Individual Title as Golf Finishes First at Frederick Anton III Memorial Invite

Sophomore Eddie Sot wins first career tournament to lead Golf to first win of the season.

Results

The Basics
  • The lead: Sophomore Eddie Sot shot a one-under-par 70 to finish first out of 90 golfers to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology golf team to a 1st-place finish Sunday at the Frederick W. Anton III Memorial Invitational, hosted by Swarthmore College.
  • Score: Stevens (298) - 1st place out of 16 teams
  • Location: Rock Manor Golf Club - Wilmington, Del. (Par 71 - 6,405 yards)
  • Short Story: Playing in just his second collegiate event, Sot topped the field by just one shot. The single-round score of 70 is the second-lowest single-round score in program history. Alumnus Frank Szucs shot a final-round 69 on Sept. 27, 2015 at the Hamilton College Invitational. The Berkeley Heights, New Jersey native becomes just the sixth player in program history to earn an individual tournament championship. The win was the first for the team in the 2019-20 season and is the fourth under third-year head coach Charles Papendick, The victory moved Papendick into a tie with Joseph Stahley atop the program's career coaching wins leaderboard.
  • The Leaderboard: The scoring Ducks' combined for a 14-over-par 298 to win the team title by three shots over Division II's Chestnut Hill College. The carded score is the second-lowest single-round score in program history, falling just three strokes shy of Oct. 2015's 295, shot on the second day of play at the McDaniel's Mason-Dixon Collegiate Classic. It is just the program's second single-round team score under 300. 
  • Of note: Play was suspended due to darkness with 19 competitors unable to complete the course. 

The Finishes
  • Junior Luke Labenski shot a career-low 73 to tie for sixth. His previous low round was a 77, achieved a three different points last season. The Ducks joined Penn State-Abington as the only team to have multiple finishers shoot two-over or better.
  • Sophomore A.J. Iacobellis tied for 14th with a five-over-par 76.
  • Junior Vincent Cortese shot a 79 and freshman Brian Spector carded an 86 in his first collegiate competition to round out Stevens' scoring.
