HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 2, 2020) – Under the leadership of current Director of Athletics
Russell Rogers, who just completed his 20th year in the position, the Stevens Institute of Technology Department of Athletics has risen to unprecedented levels of success.
Under Rogers' leadership, Stevens has finished inside the top 45 in the DIII College Directors' Cup standings 11 consecutive years including a program-best 13th-place finish in both 2010-11 and 2015-16. The Ducks also won the Jostens Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Institution of the Year Award in both 2007-08 and 2012-13, while also finishing as the Collegiate Athletic Administrators of New Jersey DIII Cup Winner in seven of the last 10 years.
The Department of Athletics will look back into the archives to reflect on the development's evolution under Rogers. Each week, key moments will be highlighted that happened "This Week in Stevens History."
The week of November 2-8
Nov. 2, 2019 – Barnes and McNeill Both Place Inside the Top-10 at the Temple Open
Competing for the first time in the 2019-20 season, first year
Claire McNeill along with sophomore
Kiera Barnes both earned top-10 finishes at their respective weapons at the Temple Open.
McNeill opened her collegiate career in a big way, finishing in 10th place in epee and moved on to the final 16 fencers during bracket play. She was the fourth-best finisher of all fencers among NCAA Division III teams. Barnes, meanwhile, produced a ninth-place finish at sabre and advanced to the third round in bracket play. She finished the day with seven total victories and was the third-highest DIII fencer in the meet.
Nov. 2, 2013 – Cahill Becomes First Stevens Men's XC Runner to Win Individual E8 Title
In his last shot in his illustrious career on Castle Point,
Michael Cahill became the first Stevens men's cross country student-athlete to win the Empire 8 Conference Individual Title.
After finishing in 18th, sixth and second overall in his first three seasons, Cahill finally broke through with a final 8K time of 25:36 to win by 48 seconds and capture the E8 crown that had illuded him three times prior. His time was the second-fastest 8K time of his career.
Cahill is joined by
Greg Arabagian (2017) as the only two men's cross country runners who won the Empire 8 Individual title for the Ducks in their 11 years in the conference.
Nov. 3, 2018 – Women's Soccer Wins Fourth Consecutive Empire 8 Tournament Title
The women's soccer program exited the Empire 8 in style in 2018 when they won their fourth consecutive E8 title with a 3-0 win over Utica College. The Ducks are the only program in conference history to win four consecutive E8 titles.
Ally Wanzor,
Misha Brewster and
Julia Panko all found the back of the net in the home victory to clinch a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the Ducks. The win also added to head coach
Jeff Parker's impressive home postseason resume. In his 19 seasons at the helm, Parker has led Stevens to a 32-1-4 overall record at home in the postseason, with zero home losses in the conference tournament.
Nov. 4, 2006 – Women's Soccer, Men's Soccer and Women's Volleyball All Win Skyline Conference Title on the Same Day
The final Skyline Conference matches for men's soccer, women's soccer and women's volleyball led to a banner day for Stevens in 2006 when the Ducks won all three Skyline tournament titles in their respective sports as they played for the final time before moving to the Empire 8 for the 2007-08 academic year.
All three events occurred in Hoboken, starting with women's soccer at 1:00 p.m. knocking off Manhattanville College 2-0 to win back-to-back league titles. Siena York-Carr was named the tournament MVP and was joined by Bailey Flood as the goal scorers for the Ducks. Stevens ran its unbeaten streak to a then-program record 15 consecutive matches.
The action then shifted inside as the women's volleyball team started at 3:00 p.m. and swept past Farmingdale State 30-10, 30-13, 30-24 to claim their third straight conference title.
Melanie Volk registered six kills, four digs and four blocks in the title match to be named the tournament MVP as Stevens improved to 31-5 on the year.
The historic day concluded at 7:00 p.m. with men's soccer topping U.S. Merchant Marine Academy 2-0 for its fourth straight league title. Tournament MVP Chris McGreevy found the back of the net eight minutes into the contest and Al Lockhart added an insurance goal in the 74th minute to clinch the win. The win pushed Stevens' conference win streak to 44 consecutive matches, a streak that lasted five years and reached 56 straight as the Ducks moved into the Empire 8.
Nov. 5, 2017 – Borai Named Outstanding Wrestler as Wrestling Wins Ithaca Invite
Stevens wrestling started the 2017-18 season in style as tallied 142 points and took home the team title at the Ithaca College Invitational, topping sixth-ranked Johnson & Wales in the process. Additionally, unseeded wrestler
Joey Borai made his way through the ranks at 125 points and won the individual championship to be named the event's Most Outstanding Wrestler.
Along with Borai,
Troy Stanich (133 pounds),
Zach Wilhelm (157 pounds) and
Thomas Poklikuha (165 pounds) all won individual titles as well. Additionally
Brett Kaliner (141 pounds) finished runner-up,
Michael Derin (141 pounds) finished in fifth place and
Dylan Van Sickell (149 pounds) grabbed fifth.
Nov. 5, 2016 – Women's Cross Country Wins Program's First-Ever ECAC Championship
Led by top-10 finishes from
Jackie Endres and
Paige Metzheiser, the women's cross country team won its first-ever ECAC Mid-Atlantic Region Championship. The Ducks scored 67 points to win the event and top the field of 14, including Vassar College who placed second with 84 points.
Endres ran a 6K time of 25:10.8 and Metzheiser finished just behind her in 25:17.0 as the duo finished in fifth and seventh place, respectively. Katie Brodecki crossed in 12th place with a time of 25:44.5 while
Lauren Logan and
Breanna Veilleux both earned top-25 finishes as well to clinch the win for Stevens.
Nov. 6, 2011 – Women's Tennis Cracks ITA Top-20 for the First Time in Program History
Another first for Stevens came in 2011 when the women's tennis program cracked the top-20 of the ITA Northeast Regional Rankings for the first time in program history. The Ducks were ranked 20th in the poll and had the Empire 8 Player and Rookie of the Year,
Jessica Bourque, along with four other all-conference performers.
The Ducks finished the fall season with an 11-1 overall record and won the E8 regular season title. In her first year on Castle Point, Bourque headed into the spring season ranked No. 17 among all singles players in the region.
Nov. 7, 2009 – Women's Volleyball Captures Sixth Straight Conference Tournament Title
After winning their final three Skyline Conference Tournament titles from 2004-06, the women's volleyball team opened E8 play in identical fashion as they won the conference tournament crown each of their first three years in the league, culminating in a 3-0 sweep of Ithaca College in 2009 on their home court.
The Ducks topped the Bombers 27-25, 25-18, 25-18 and got a monstrous 25-kill, 16-dig double-double from Sarah Byrne who earned tournament championship MVP honors. Much like women's soccer, the match is a shining example of Stevens' impressive resume at home in the postseason. Since 2002, the Ducks are 32-4 at home in postseason play.
Nov. 7, 2015 – Men's Soccer Wins Ninth Straight E8 Conference Crown, 13th Straight Overall
From 2003-15, the Stevens men's soccer program went on a historic run, winning 13 consecutive conference titles, nine in the Empire 8 and four in the Skyline. The run culminated in 2015 when the Ducks defeated Ithaca 1-0 in the championship final thanks to a
Carson Pryor goal in the 24th minute.
In 12 seasons as a part of the E8, Stevens went 20-0-2 in the conference tournament. To keep with the theme, the men's soccer program has also been impressive at home in the postseason, holding a 31-3-6 overall record in Hoboken in postseason competition.
Nov. 7, 2015 – Field Hockey Becomes First #3 Seed to Win E8 Conference Title
Stevens field hockey also made some history of their own in 2015 when they became the first field hockey team to capture the E8 Tournament title as a #3 seed. The Ducks knocked off St. John Fisher 2-1 in the semifinal matchup before topping #1 Ithaca 4-1 in the championship bout.
In the title contest, senior
Dailyn Brook tallied two goals and an assists while
Cassidy O'Hearn and
Victoria Alvarez added one goal apiece. Brook was named the tournament MVP and finished the two-game tournament with four goals and an assist. Deadlocked at 1-1 heading into the break, Stevens outscored the Bombers 3-0 in the second half to grab the victory.
