Softball’s Schattin Earns CoSIDA Academic All-District Accolade

Senior from Princeton Junction, N.J. becomes third player in program history to earn accolade

GREENWOOD, Ind. (May 14, 2020) – For the second consecutive season and the fourth time in program history, the Stevens Institute of Technology softball team placed a player on the Google Cloud College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) All-District team as senior Samantha Schattin earned the honor for the first time in her career.

One year after Christine LaRochelle became just the third player to be recognized by CoSIDA, Schattin becomes the fourth as the duo joins Corinne Loncar (2017) and Danielle DeFeo (2012 & 2014) as Stevens softball's lone recipients of the prestigious honor in the 10-year history of the program.

"We are very proud of Sammy for earning this recognition," head coach Emily Kaczmarek said. "She is a true scholar-athlete who competes athletically and academically at a very high level. This award is very well-deserved."

Schattin is a standout in the classroom as well as on the field. Majoring in mechanical engineering, Schattin posted a 3.94 grade point average and is on track to graduate in 2021 with a bachelor's as well as a master's degree. She is also a three-time NFCA Scholar All-America selection.

On the field, Schattin was a National Fastpitch Coaches Association Third Team All-Region selection in 2019 after hitting .381 with a .906 OPS. In the first four games of the 2020 season, Schattin was hitting .500 and recorded a hit in each contest. Her 126 career hits ranks among the top-10 in program history as she was on pace to become just the fourth player in program history to register 150 hits in a career.

She now will attempt to become the second player in program history to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-American after LaRochelle did so a year ago. First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Academic All-America ballot, the results of which will be announced in early June. Stevens is located in Division III's Second District, which encompasses schools from Connecticut, Washington, D.C., Delaware, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Vermont and West Virginia. None of Division III's eight geographic districts contain a Second Team.
