Men’s Swimming Falls to No. 17 Rowan

Ducks total three wins on the day but fall to nationally-ranked Profs

HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 11, 2022)  – First-year Angel Velasquez won the 100-yard breaststroke, but the Stevens Institute of Technology men's swimming team fell to No. 17 Rowan University 120-85 Friday in a non-conference dual at the DeBaun Aquatic Center.

Sophomore Ryan Ward won the 500-yard freestyle as the Ducks totaled three race victories on the day, but fell to 0-2. The meeting between the teams was the first in Hoboken since 2016.

Jack Watson had two victories to lead Rowan, who improved to 2-1 on the year. The nationally-ranked Profs have won the last four matchups between the programs.

In addition to their three first-place finishes, the Ducks scored seven second-place finishes, while Rowan only had four.

Velasquez won the 100 Breast in a time of 59.93 seconds, posting his first collegiate sub 1-minute time. His time is currently tops in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) by over a second.

Ward, meanwhile, topped the field in the 500 Free, touching the wall in 5:00.02, edging Rowan's Michael Fracchiola by .56 seconds to win the race. Ward continues to lead the MAC with a time of 4:56.48, achieved in the Ducks' dual with Merchant Marine.

Junior Darius Truong accounted for the other victory on the day, topping the field in the 100-yard butterfly, reaching the wall in a comfortable 51.86 seconds, which is the top mark in the MAC this season.

Other top marks included first-year Amedeo Bove set the pace for the MAC in the 1,650-yard freestyle, setting a collegiate best time of 29:21 and sophomore Edward Platonov finished second in the 400-yard individual medley, but set the top time in the conference, after touching the wall in 4:22.16. Graduate student Ali Kolenovic also moved into second place in the 200-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 1:47.60, to move directly behind Platonov, who currently tops the conference leaderboard. Finally, the Ducks' 400-yard freestyle relay of first-years Will Stibor and Leo Timmermann, along with Kolenovic and Platonov posted the top time in the MAC, completing the race in 3:14.94, but getting edging out by just 13-hundredths-of-a-second.
