NEW YORK, N.Y (April 18, 2023) – Sophomore Jack Spellman of the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team was named to the Men's All-MET Second Team – Division III, the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) announced Tuesday. The accolade is the first for the Westfield, New Jersey native.

Spellman continued to be a disruptive presence in the paint, leading the MAC Freedom in blocks for the second straight season to earn the league's Defensive Player of the Year award. The Westfield, New Jersey native totaled 84 rejections to rank fifth in DIII and set a new single-season program record. His 12 blocks against New Jersey City University on Nov. 16 set the Ducks' single-game record and mark the most in a game by any NCAA player this season, as well as the most by a DIII player since Penn State-Harrisburg's Gbolahan Alliyu had 12 in a victory over Wesley on Jan. 11, 2017.

Spellman increased his scoring and rebounding numbers from his first-year season, averaging 15 points and 10 rebounds per game in 2022-23 after posting 10.1 and 9.2 in 2021-22. Spellman totaled 11 double-doubles, had one triple-double, and finished ranked inside the top-five in the MAC Freedom in scoring (third), rebounding (second) and blocks (first). He had six games with 20 or more points and poured in a career-high 30 in a victory over Misericordia on Dec. 3. Spellman closed the season by reaching double figures in nine straight games and had a double-double in three of his last four.

The second-year forward is the sixth player under head coach Bobby Hurley to earn All-MET recognition.

Spellman will be honored, along with all All-MET selections, on April 27 at the 90th MBWA All-MET Haggerty dinner at the Sleepy Hollow Hotel and Conference Center in Tarrytown, N.Y.
