SWARTHMORE, Pa. (September 17, 2023) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team continued its fall 2023 campaign by totaling seven victories at The Swarthmore College Invitational, a two-day event featuring Stevens, Haverford, Franklin & Marshall and the hosting Garnet.
In an event that featured three rounds of both singles and doubles competition – two on Saturday and one Sunday – sophomore
Stephanie Untermeyer joined senior
Polina Odintseva and first-year
Julianna Gomez in collecting two wins on the day. First-year
Alix Dry partnered with Untermeyer to score a doubles win against Franklin & Marshall, while first-year
Lorena Piegas paired with Odintseva to also post a pairs victory over the Diplomats. Sophomore
Emma Eguia recorded one singles win to cap off the weekend.
Stevens scored a pair of singles wins against Haverford. Odintseva notched the first win of the day with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Abhishree Menon. Gomez followed one flight later, with a 6-2, 5-7, 10-7 win over Annie Barrett.
Against Swarthmore, it was Untermeyer picked up a singles win on line one, topping Eda Mjekiqi in straight sets (6-2, 6-2).
The final round of the event saw the Ducks post their best win total of the weekend, splitting the doubles matches, while adding a singles victory. Untermeyer and Dry posted a strong 8-1 win over F&M's top duo of Sophia Rhazali and Rebecca Bellick. Odintseva and Piegas followed with a hard fought 8-7 (4) win over Colclough and Lorena Saavedra. Gomez added her second singles win of the day with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Colclough and Eguia topped Jocelyn Chow 8-1 to round out Stevens' victories. Dry nearly collected her first career singles win, dropping a three-set match to Bellick in which the final set came down to a 16-14 decision.
