Philadelphia, Pa. – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's fencing team participated in the Coach Nikki Franke Classic, hosted by Temple University, on Sunday afternoon.
A total of 18 student-athletes competed across the three weapon groups, with seven fencers apiece in epee and foil and four in sabre.
HOW IT HAPPENED (SABRE)
Spencer Depew led the sabre squad with four victories, going 4-1 with 23 touches. He earned wins over Osratein Idahor of Haverford, Avy Nakache of Yeshiva, Zak Martin of Florida and Vasil Atanassov of North Carolina.
Tyler Kometani and
Sean Haritonides each posted two wins, with Haritonides recording 16 touches and Kometani 15. Mark Liu also competed at sabre, tallying one win and 16 touches. In the tableau, Depew fell 15-9 to Zachary Shoman of Duke in the opening round, while Liu was topped 15-5 by Ben Kogan of Penn.
HOW IT HAPPENED (FOIL)
David Trubetski,
Dev Badlani and
Nick Reznick paced foil with 2-2 marks in pool play. Trubetski topped Trey Plastaras of Sacred Heart and Hedi Benayed of Rowan while recording 12 touches. Reznick downed Alastair Thompson of Johns Hopkins and Jassen Alexis of Temple, finishing with 16 touches. Badlani defeated Paul Greenlead of Drew and Lucas Oberdiek of Swarthmore while matching Trubetski with 12 touches.
Ricardo Pires and
Dillon Miller each notched a victory, with Pires scoring 12 touches and Miller 11.
In the tableau, Reznick advanced to the Round of 32 with a 15-12 win over Oliver Po of Haverford before being knocked off by Conrad Lo of Penn, 15-7. Trubetski was edged 15-10 by Aiden Song of North Carolina, while Miller, Badlani and Pires also suffered first-round setbacks. Badlani had the narrowest margin, dropping a 15-12 decision.
HOW IT HAPPENED (EPEE)
Andrew Yurovchak had a strong showing in Pool 4, going 4-1 and matching Kyran Lin of Duke with a +12 touch differential. His only setback in the group stage came against Lin, as he earned wins over David Nuth of Swarthmore, Ethan Black of Drexel, Alec Zhang of MIT and Szymon Wojciechowski of NYU. Newcomer
Donovan Aggeler went 2-2 and finished second in his group with 16 touches, defeating Ivan Perevorukhov of Florida and Ryan Scharf of NJIT.
Esat Adiloglu also tallied two victories and 15 touches over his five bouts.
Skanda Krishnan,
Riley Parker,
Patrick Nohilly and
Kieran Jackson each added one win in pool action.
All seven fencers received byes into the Round of 64. Krishnan upended Ayrton Sako of Wagner 15-7 in the second round, then upset sixth-seeded Kyran Lin of Duke 15-14 before being clipped by Ben Serafin of Penn in the quarterfinals. The other six were knocked off in the second round, with Parker and Nohilly each falling 15-12.
