Box Score 2 HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team, No. 4 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll, swept a home tri-match against No. 11 Wentworth and Drew on Saturday, knocking off the Leopards in four sets before sweeping the Rangers.
HOW IT HAPPENED – Wentworth
The Leopards led 4-2 and 6-3 early in the opening set, all three Ducks' points coming on Wentworth service errors, but three
Bennett Heydorn kills in a four-point stretch pulled Stevens back within a point, 7-6. Wentworth pushed its lead back out to 11-8, but
Tyler Hoke went on a run, picking up two kills, a solo block, and a joint block with
Koby Sherman, leveling the set at 12.
Three more Wentworth service errors wiped out a trio of one-point cushions and an
Alex Olcott solo block gave Stevens its first lead of the set, 16-15. Kills by Heydorn, Olcott, and Sherman kept the Ducks in front 17-15, 18-16, and 19-17, respectively. In all, neither team scored two consecutive points until Wentworth tied the set at 22.
After
Greg Li gave Stevens the lead back with a kill, Wentworth grabbed the next two points for a set point opportunity, but a ninth service error of the frame squared things at 24. Heydorn recorded a service ace creating a set point chance for Stevens, but Wentworth reeled off three straight, grabbing the early 1-0 lead.
As they did in the first set, Wentworth led 4-2 in the second, Sherman and Hoke providing kills for Stevens. Sherman added a second kill to make it 4-3, but Wentworth opened a 7-4 lead and maintained at least a two-point cushion until back-to-back Sherman and Hoke kills made it 10-9. After a Wentworth kill, a Sherman kill and Li/
Joshua Levandoske joint block squared the set at 11.
Following two straight from Wentworth, the Ducks were relentless in their pursuit of a lead, tying the set at 15-all and 16-all before Sherman's seventh kill of the set finally gave Stevens a 17-16 advantage. Wentworth flipped the score with two straight, but the Ducks flipped it right back with two in a row of their own.
One momentum swing after another resulted in a 24-23 set point opportunity for the Ducks, which Sherman put away with his 11
th kill of the match.
Three Wentworth errors, a Levandoske kill, and an Olcott solo block gave the Ducks a 5-2 third set lead. Heydorn and Sherman notched three kills between them, but the Leopards worked their way back to a 10-10 tie. Stevens went back in front 12-10, but Wentworth again leveled the set at 13. Heydorn (twice), Li (twice) and Olcott recorded five straight points for the Ducks via kills, keeping the Ducks up 18-16.
Sitting at 999 kills, Sherman notched the milestone marker, then added 1,001 for good measure, putting the Red and Gray up 20-17. Sherman added 1,002 and 1,003 shortly thereafter, the latter closing out the set and a 2-1 lead for the Ducks.
The fourth set featured ties at 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 9-all, before two Wentworth attack errors, two Hoke blocks, and a Sherman kill put Stevens up 14-9. The Leopards did not draw closer than three points the rest of the way as the Ducks closed out the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED – Drew
Stevens (11-2) took the opening point, but did not lead again until 8-7;
Titus Rodz and
Ryan Schmid (twice) notched early kills for the Ducks,
Esteban Schmitt giving the Ducks the 8-7 edge with his first kill of the day.
Carver Weirick and
Cade Allen registered kills for 9-8 and 10-9 Duck leads. The sides alternated points between 11-9 and 16-14 before a service error and Schmidt kill put the Ducks up four, though the Rangers eventually rallied to tie at 19.
Weirick and Schmidt added a kill each and Schmitt picked up a solo block as the Ducks rebuilt a three-point cushion, 23-20, forcing a Drew timeout. Stevens closed out the set with a Rangers' service error and Schmidt service ace.
Rodz and Weirick had early second set kills for Stevens, but Drew put the Ducks in chase mode, building leads of 6-4, 7-6, 10-9, and 11-10. Two Schmid kills, plus one from Rodz, gave the Red and Gray a two-point cushion; Rodz and Weirick (twice) added kills helping grow the lead to 18-14. Six Rangers errors gave the Ducks set point, which Rodz put away with his fourth kill of the frame.
The Ducks went up 5-1 in the third, courtesy of four Drew errors and a Schmidt/
Cade Allen joint block. Rodz, Allen, and Schmid all added a kill apiece, but the Rangers closed to within a point on four separate occasions.
With the score 12-11, two Allen kills and three Drew attack errors in a string of six points provided Stevens a five-point lead, 17-12. Kills from Schmitt, Schmid, Schmidt, Heydorn, and Allen helped the Ducks hold at least a four-point edge the rest of the way, as the Ducks closed out the set and 2-0 day on the court.
