Kristaps Aldins was selected the conference Coach of the Year, and nine members of the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team ()including Finch) were named All-MAC Freedom, as announced by the league office Monday morning.
The reliever Finch was joined on the First Team by starting pitchers
Jordan Fisse and
Justin Doyle, along with outfielder
Dylan Fishbough.
Erik Sibbach made it three starting pitchers named all-conference with Second Team honors, with
Kieran O'Brien (third base) and
Eli Somers (designated hitter) joining him. First baseman
Victor Schilleci and shortstop
Chip Krese each earned Honorable Mention selection.
Lebanon Valley's Jace Fetterman was named Player of the Year and DeSales' Jacob Rivera was selected Rookie of the Year, rounding out the major conference award winners.
Finch becomes the second straight Stevens sophomore to earn Pitcher of the Year following
Erik Sibbach's honor last season. The Brentwood, Tenn. Native notched five saves, four coming in conference play, striking out 28 batters in 19.2 innings during the regular season, while allowing 14 hits, with just one of those going for extra bases. During a stretch of 10 appearances from early March to early April, Finch went 13 innings without allowing an earned run, striking out 20 while yielding just eight hits.
Aldins wins his fourth Coach of the Year honor at the helm of the Ducks and first as a MAC Freedom member. Aided by support staff including but not limited to assistant coaches
Brendan Smith &
Vinny Carlesi, Jr. and analytics team coordinator
Vaughn Weber, Aldins guided the Ducks to 10 straight wins to open conference play. Picked to finish in a tie for third in the pre-season poll, the Ducks clinched the regular season title even before the final conference series of the year
Doyle earned all-conference selection for the second time as a Duck (Second Team, 2023) after a stalwart season with Top 3 marks among all conference hurlers in ERA, wins, strikeouts, innings pitched, and batting average against. His numbers in MAC Freedom play might have even been better, leading the conference in ERA, wins, and strikeouts, including a five-start stretch in which he went at least six innings, allowed three earned runs or fewer, and struck out at least five.
Fisse went stride for stride with Doyle through much of the season, also ranking in the Top 3 in the conference in ERA, wins, strikeouts, and batting average against. Fisse struck out 11 batters without walking a single batter against Delaware Valley, a single game high for any pitcher in any game this year, one of three 8+ strikeout games he had in MAC Freedom action.
Fishbough only started three of his first seven appearances of the season and hit ..182 across those contests, but went off over the final six weeks. From March 19 through the regular season finale April 29, Fishbough hit .436 (44-for-101) in 28 games, all starts, with 16 extra-base hits, 19 RBI's, 23 runs, and 11 steals in 13 attempts. He hit safely in 16 straight games, including a 6-for-6, five-run, six-RBI game against New Jersey City when he broke the school record for hits in a game.
Sibbach rebounded from some early season struggles, finishing the season among the Top 7 among all conference pitchers in ERA, wins, innings pitched, strikeouts, and batting average against, winning five of his final nine regular season starts. The Boxford, Mass. native turned in two of the finest starts by a conference hurler all year, yielding just four hits over eight shutout innings against Lebanon Valley, then turning in an 80-pitch complete game against Delaware Valley.
O'Brien provided a solid bat in the middle of the Ducks' lineup, hitting .275 with 31 runs scored, 13 RBI's, and a 10-for-12 success rate on stolen bases. The Wappingers Falls, N.Y. native also drew 21 walks and was hit by a pitch an astounding 15 times in 31 regular season starts, all contributing to an on-base percentage that ranked in the Top 20 among all conference batters.
All-Conference Honorable Mention and 3
rd Team All-Region last season, Somers put together another spectacular campaign this year, hitting .365 during the regular season with 35 runs scored, 38 RBI's, 21 extra-base hits, 27 walks and just 18 strikeouts in 148 at-bats. Somers had at least four RBI's in four games, including back-to-back games to wrap the regular season when he hit .600 with three homers, six runs, and 12 RBI's.
Schilleci showcased both power and patience at the top of the lineup, leading the team in both home runs and walks while spending more than two-thirds of the season in the leadoff spot. Schilleci hit .299 with 37 runs scored and 35 RBI's during the season, then hit .375 with five walks during the MAC Freedom semifinal series against Lebanon Valley, scoring six runs, driving in two, and tying the program single-season home run record with his 10
th of the year.
Krese missed nearly all of March, but was superb both before and after, hitting .363 with 25 runs scored and 23 RBI's during the regular season, then homered in all three games of the team's MAC Freedom semifinal series win over Lebanon Valley, hitting .429 (6-for-14) with four runs scored and eight RBI's.
The All-MAC Freedom baseball team is nominated and voted on by the eight conference baseball coaches.
