HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 13, 2007) – Freshman Evan Wilson registered a new pool and school record for the 1,000-yard freestyle on Saturday afternoon at the De Baun Aquatic Center with a clocking of 9:51.77 as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's swimming team defeated Fairleigh Dickinson University by a 104-39 count in each squad's 2007-08 season-opener. Wilson broke a record that was previously held by junior and current teammate Anthony Barrilli, who swam the race in a time of 10:06.17 in 2005.
Wilson also received first-place points in two other events on the day. He won the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard freestyle relay with clockings of 1:01.33 and 1:34.06, respectively. Freshman Nicholas Walulik was victorious in three races as well. He was part of a team that recorded a pool-setting mark of 1:41.80 in the 200-yard medley relay before notching times of 1:48.51 in the 200-yard freestyle and 48.91 in the 100-yard freestyle.
In addition, the Ducks (1-0) obtained strong performances from freshmen Matt Preedy and Thomas Takahashi. Preedy posted a clocking of 23.37 in the 50-yard freestyle and Takahashi accumulated a time of 2:07.42 in the 100-yard individual medley.
The Devils (0-1) were led by sophomore Peter Milazzo (Lewisburg, Pa.) who boasted a winning mark of 5:33.08 in the 500-yard freestyle event. He also earned third-place kudos in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a clocking of 11:30.41.
Head Coach Trevor Miele and his squad return to the pool this weekend as they compete in the NYU Fall Invitational. The time for the first event has yet to be announced.
