Men's Volleyball Posts 2-0 Day at Second UVC Crossover

(March 10, 2012) – In the second round of United Volleyball Conference Crossover action hosted by Nazareth College, the Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team recorded a pair of victories from Medaille College and Elmira College by identical, 3-1, outcomes. The Ducks improve to 15-3 overall and 8-1 in the UVC with one another conference match slated for tomorrow morning.

In the first match against Elmira, 25-22, 20-25, 25-17, 25-20, sophomore outside hitter Ryan Seifert (Chicopee, Mass.) paced the Ducks to victory with 18 kills in 29 attempts with one error, good for a .586 hitting percentage. Seifert also recorded three assists, three blocks and a dig.

Fellow sophomore outside hitter David Evans (Penfield, N.Y.) also posted double-digit kills with 16. Evans led the team with seven digs to go along with four blocks and two aces.

Junior middle hitter Jake Modestow (Hampden, Mass.) was a menace at the net against the Soaring Eagles, turning away 10 kill attempts to lead all players. Modestow tallied two solo blocks and eight block assists in the match, and also added two digs, two kills and an ace.

The Ducks had 14 blocks as a team against Elmira.

The setting freshmen tandem of Kevin Aeckerle (Henrietta, N.Y.) and Dylan Schlosser (Emmaus, Pa.) combined for 44 assists and 13 digs. Aeckerle handed out 28 assists and posted six digs, while Schlosser dished out 16 helps to go along with seven digs.

Junior outside hitter Thomas Hannum (Libertyville, Ill.) and freshman opposite hitter Ian Tyger (York, Pa.) posted nine and seven kills, respectively, and also totaled seven combined blocks.

Against the Mavericks in the second match, 20-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-20, the Ducks as a team hit at a .402 clip and recorded 34 digs.

Evans guided the Ducks with 17 kills and a .593 hitting percentage. He also added four digs. Seifert hit .476 against Medaille with 11 kills in 21 chances and chipped in five digs, two assists and two blocks.

Modestow would prove to be a difference maker once again at the net with six blocks, while Hannum was the third Duck with 10-plus kills, chipping in 11. Hannum would add four digs and three blocks as well.

The setters combined for 45 assists in this match, with Schlosser handing out a team-high 25. Aeckerle would record 20 assists and seven digs. Schlosser posted four digs in the second match.

Freshman outside hitter Etan Bennett (Rochester, N.Y.) nearly eclipsed double-digit kills with nine in 16 tries (.562%) and added three blocks.

Stevens will take on Nazareth tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. in the final crossover match this season. After tomorrow morning's match, the Ducks will prepare for their trip to Florida on the 16th and 17th, where the team will play four in Winter Haven and Tampa.
