Bryan Szayna competed for the ITA Northeast Regional doubles championships on Sunday. All of today's action took place at the Hobart and William Smith Tennis Center & Bristol Field House in Geneva, N.Y.
Gomez and Szayna faced off against JT Wynne and Travis Leaf of Skidmore College in their semifinal doubles flight. The Duck duo wasted no time, jumping out to an early 6-1 lead and put the pressure on their Skidmore opponents. Wynne and Leaf didn't go down quietly and brought the match to 7-4 before Marc Feliu and Bryan sealed the win to punch their ticket to the finals winning 8-4.
In the finals, the freshman from Barcelona, Spain and Ambler, Pa. native faced Alan Dubrovsky and Walker Anderson of Hobart College. The finals were a best-of-three format instead of the typical eight game pro set. Marc Feliu and Bryan came up short in the first set 2-6, the duo would need to win the next two sets to take the crown. Gomez and Szayna were determined to push it to a winner take all third set and recorded a solid 6-4 win in the second set. The Duck duo could not complete the comeback and finished as doubles runner up after losing the third set 2-6. Although Gomez and Szayna came up short they put together an impressive performance in only their second tournament paired together.
"While we may have lost, I know Marc Feliu [Gomez] and I have no regrets and will be coming back next year hungry," stated
Bryan Szayna. "The guys watching created an amazing atmosphere for us and without them we would not have made it as far as we did. I am beyond excited for the Spring with this young team and cannot wait to see what we can accomplish."
This concludes the Fall season for the Stevens men's tennis team, they will be back in action in the Spring as they look to defend their Empire 8 conference title.
