Stevens Athletics to Celebrate 2019 NCAA Division III Week, April 1-7

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 1, 2019)  – The Stevens Institute of Technology Department of Athletics will celebrate 2019's NCAA Division III Week.

The festivities begin on Monday, April 1 with a Appreciation Day, in which Stevens' student-athletes have prepared a potluck meal for all coaches, department staff and athletic trainers, which will be accompanied by a series of video messages compiled by team captains.

Stevens' Student-Athlete Advisory Council will be sponsoring a study hall on Tuesday, April 2 in which freshmen student-athletes can learn about the various SAAC programs.

Rohan Murphy will come to campus to share his inspirational story and message with our student-athletes on Wednesday, April 3 in Canavan Arena. He's the founder of the inspirational networking community, CatchSpark, com and was a three-time varsity letter winner in wrestling at Penn State University as a walk-on, despite a birth defect that led to the amputation of both of his legs. A bronze-medal winning and United States record-setting Paralympic weightlifter, Murphy will speak on a variety of subjects, including overcoming adversity and accepting differences.

Thursday brings a day filled with community service, highlighted by a sandwich-assembly project for the Hoboken Homeless Shelter.

Friday is National Student-Athlete Day and the Ducks will take you inside a day in the life of a Stevens student-athlete with an Instagram Takeover by field hockey junior Michaela Thompson. There will be fun facts about our student-athletes, photos, stories, live video and much more, as fans will have a unique opportunity to step inside a day in the life of a Duck.

The week concludes with a Spirit Day on Saturday, April 6 as the Ducks encourage everyone to #RedOUT the men's volleyball games, men's tennis matches and the softball doubleheader. Additionally, Women's Lacrosse will be home at the DeBaun Athletic Complex on Wednesday night for a non-conference matchup with Union.

Since 2012, Division III Week is a positive opportunity for all individuals associated with Division III to observe and celebrate the impact of athletics and of student-athletes on the campus and surrounding community. During the week, every Division III school and conference office is encouraged to conduct a type of outreach activity that falls into one of three categories: academic accomplishment; athletic experience; or leadership/community service/campus involvement.

Division III Week also highlights Division III's Identity Initiative, which was introduced in 2010 to sharpen the division's identity and to enable schools and conferences to more effectively explain why they prefer to compete in Division III. The initiative has been guided by a strategic-positioning platform, describing Division III as a place where student-athletes can "follow your passions and develop your potential," within an approach that combines rigorous academics, competitive sports and an opportunity to pursue other interests.
