HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 16, 2020) – Under the leadership of current Director of Athletics
Russell Rogers, who just completed his 20th year in the position, the Stevens Institute of Technology Department of Athletics has risen to unprecedented levels of success.
Under Rogers' leadership, Stevens has finished inside the top 45 in the DIII College Directors' Cup standings 11 consecutive years including a program-best 13th-place finish in both 2010-11 and 2015-16. The Ducks also won the Jostens Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Institution of the Year Award in both 2007-08 and 2012-13, while also finishing as the Collegiate Athletic Administrators of New Jersey DIII Cup Winner in seven of the last 10 years.
The Department of Athletics will look back into the archives to reflect on the development's evolution under Rogers. Each week, key moments will be highlighted that happened "This Week in Stevens History."
The week of November 16-22
Nov. 16, 2019 – Women's Volleyball Tops Susquehanna to Advance to Regional Final for First Time Since 2016
Led by 14 kills apiece from
Casey King and
Sara Hain, the Stevens women's volleyball team toppled Susquehanna in a five-set thriller 25-9, 21-25, 25-14, 25-18, 15-11 to advance to the Regional Final for the first time since 2016.
The win capped a string of 13 consecutive victories for the Ducks. After starting the year 9-1, Stevens swept through the MAC Freedom regular season and won the conference tournament to advance to the NCAA Tournament. After knocking off Carnegie Mellon in straight sets in the opening round, the Ducks avenged a loss from earlier in the season against the River Hawks to move on in the tournament.
In addition to the 14 kills offensively from King and Hain, Stevens also had five different players in double figures for digs, led by 17 each from
Jillian Roumbanis,
Elizabeth Chu and
Kathleen Riegner.
Nov. 16, 2016 – Stevens Wins CAANJ DIII Cup for Sixth Straight Year
For the sixth straight year, the Stevens Department of Athletics was awarded the Collegiate Athletic Administrators of New Jersey Cup as the top performing Division III university in the state based on program-wide success.
As a department, Stevens enjoyed another banner year which included eight conference championships, six NCAA Tournament wins, five individual NCAA national championships and two CoSIDA Academic All-Americans. Based on that success, Stevens earned a 13th place finish in the Learfield Cup standings.
In addition to the CAANJ Cup,
Amy Regan was named DIII student-athlete of the year while
Linda Vollkommer-Lynch earned the prestigious Garden State Award.
Nov. 16, 2013 – Men's Cross Country Places Program-Best 13th at NCAA Regionals; Cahill Advances to Nationals
Led by a seventh-place individual finish from
Michael Cahill, the Stevens men's cross country team finished with a program-best 13th place finish at the NCAA DIII Atlantic Regional.The team finish was six positions better than the 2011 squad that placed 19th in the regional and the seventh-place finish from Cahill is the best finish by any men's runner in program history.
Cahill finished with a final 8K time of 25:20.3 and was less than six seconds from placing in the top-four runners at the meet. He was the first men's runner in program history to earn Atlantic All-Region honors and also became the first to qualify for the NCAA Championship.
Nov. 16, 2013 – Field Hockey Defeats Delaware Valley to Advance to ECAC Title Game for Second Straight Year
For the second consecutive year, the Stevens field hockey team advanced to the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Championship game with a 3-1 victory over Delaware Valley in the ECAC semis.

Marguerite Chavez were the goal scorers for the Ducks while goalkeeper
Emily Stukenborg made seven saves in goal to earn the win.
In their first 10 years as a varsity program, the field hockey program advanced to the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Championships four times (2007, 2011, 2012*, 2013), won the Empire 8 Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament three times (2008, 2009, 2010).
Nov. 17, 2019 – Women's Soccer Advances to Third Round of the NCAA Tournament with 2-1 Win over Middlebury
One day after the women's volleyball team advanced to the third round of the NCAA tournament, the women's soccer team matched that effort with a 2-1 victory over Middlebury in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Ducks advanced to the third round for the first time since 2015.
Gianna Nitti netted the first goal of the match less than three minutes into the contest and Middlebury answered to tie the contest in the 67th minutes. With just over 15 minutes left to play, the Ducks benefited from an own goal by the Panthers to give them the edge.
Izzy DiDario held on in goal after that, making a career-high 10 saves to earn her 13th win of the season.
Nov. 18, 2010 – Carr Named top ESPN Academic All-American in DIII Men's Soccer
Men's soccer goalkeeper Zach Carr added to his long list of accolades in his senior campaign when he was named the top ESPN Academic All-American in the College Division after posting a cumulative grade point average of 3.92.
On the field, Carr was ranked as the top goalkeeper in the nation in terms of save percentage (0.927) and goals against average (0.287). The First Team NSCAA All-American captained the Ducks to a 15-2-3 record and their fourth-straight Empire 8 Title, allowing just one goal in conference play.
Nov. 18, 2006 – Enright, Farid Each Named Tip-Off Tournament MVPs on the Same Day
On the same day in 2006, the women's and men's basketball programs each won their respective tip-off tournaments, and each had a student-athlete, who are now both in the Stevens Athletics Hall of Fame, named as the tournament's MVP.
Hall of Famer Dora Enright of the women's basketball program scored 21 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the Ducks to a 62-49 victory over MIT in the MIT Tip-Off Tournament. Enright went 10-for-15 from the floor in the championship game and also helped Stevens knock off Connecticut College in the semifinal contest.
On the men's side, 2013 HOF Inductee Waleed Farid earned MVP honors in the Scotty Wood Tip-Off Tournament after notched 21 points, three steals and three rebounds in a 73-66 victory over Muhlenberg College. Fueled by 19 points from Farid, the Ducks also topped Arcadia 59-54 in the semifinals of the tournament.
Nov. 18, 2006 – Women's Swimming Wins First-Ever Skyline Conference Title
In the final Skyline Conference Championship for the women's swimming program before shifting to the Empire 8, Stevens topped the field for the fourth time in program history and the first since 2003. The win snapped a streak of three consecutive runner-up finishes for the Ducks.
The Ducks got three wins apiece from
Emily Woo, Lorrie Brabender and Stephanie Miller who were all named co-Swimmers of the Meet. The women took home wins in every individual event with Brabender breaking a pair of Skyline Conference records in the 50 and the 100-yard freestyle.
Nov. 19, 2016 – Amy Regan Closes Historic Cross Country Career with Second Straight NCAA Title
In what was already thought of as possibly the best career of any student-athlete in the history of Stevens Athletics,
Amy Regan added another accolade to her resume in her senior season when she topped the field at the NCAA DIII Women's Cross Country Championships for the second time.
After taking a year off from the cross country program after winning the crown in 2014, Regan did not miss a beat in 2016 as she bested a group of 280 runners and won by 14.8 seconds to claim what was her sixth NCAA Individual title at the time (yes, there's still more to come). Regan completed the 6K course in 20:16.4 and finished the season undefeated.
Nov. 19, 2011 – Men's Soccer Upsets No. 4 Amherst to Advance to NCAA Tournament Sectional Final
The underdog coming in to the contest ranked at No. 14, the Stevens men's soccer team upended No. 4 Amherst in the NCAA Tournament Second Round 2-1.
Curtis Stecyk scored both goals for stevens and
Paul Killian was stellar in goal for the Ducks in the victory.
Stevens was outshot 21-6 in the match and fell behind 1-0 with seven minutes remaining in the first half. The lead did not hold long, however, as Stecyk was able to gather a loose ball from and fire a shot into the top-right of the goal.
Coming out of the break tied at one, Stecyk worked his magic once again as he dribbled past two defenders and found the back of the net with a shot into the lower left corner of the goal. The scores were only the third and fourth of the season for the junior.
Nov. 20, 2007 – Smith Becomes First Player in Program History to be Named an NFHCA All-American
After a stellar year in goal for the Ducks, Stephanie Smith became the first Stevens field hockey student-athlete to be named a NFHCA All-American. One week prior, Smith was also the first to be named to the DIII All-Region Team.
In her junior campaign, Smith finished 11-6 with five shutouts and posted a goals-against average of 1.12, which placed fifth in the nation. Additionally, Smith's save percentage of .870 ranked seventh in DIII and she helped the Ducks advance to the ECAC DIII Mid-Atlantic Championship for the first time in program history.
Nov. 21, 2007 – Roeder Becomes First Academic All-American in Women's Soccer Program History
Women's soccer student-athlete Sara Roeder was rewarded for her phenomenal efforts in the classroom and on the field in her junior season when she became the first in program history to be named a CoSIDA First Team Academic All-American.
In 2007, Roeder amassed eight points for the Ducks. Her six assists tied for the team lead in that category. She was also selected as the most valuable player of the ECAC Metro Championship after leading Stevens to the tournament title. A two-time CoSIDA first-team academic all-district selection (2006 and 2007), Roeder posted a 3.98 grade-point average as a Business & Technology major.
