Men's Swimming Falls to Montclair State in Season-Opening Meet

Hoboken, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's swimming team won three of the day's first five events, but dropped its season-opening meet from the DeBaun Aquatic Center Saturday afternoon to Montclair State, 175-87.

The Rundown
In the opening 200-yard medley relay, the Ethan Emerton-Angel Velasquez-Amadeo Bove-Will Stibor team got the win in 1:37.81 and the Ryan Ward-James S. Johnson-Leo Timmerman-Gailen V. Davis quartet touched third in 1:41.44

After Montclair took the top three spots in the 1000-yard freestyle and the top two spot in the 200-yard free, Emerton was the only swimmer under 55 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke, and Velasquez was the only swimmer under one minute in the 100-yard backstroke. Bove also took second in the 200-yard butterfly.

Stibor and Timmerman went 2-3 in the 50-yard freestyle, Stibor just .01 second back of first, and Cade Cermak took 2nd in the 100-yard free, just .15 seconds back of first. Emerton and Lukas Mikulenas took second in the 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard breaststroke, respectively.

After Montclair State took the top three spots in the 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley, in the day's final event, Stibor nearly pulled off a comeback for the ages, touching just .12 seconds back of the Red Hawks' winning quartet after trailing by 2.2 seconds with 50 meters left.

Top Performers
Emerton ended the day with four top-three finishes – two individual events and two relays. Velasquez, Bove, and Stibor each posted three top-three finishes, all three part of relay-winning teams. Cermak went top-two in a pair of events, Johnson garnered a top-two and a top-three finish, and Timmerman posted a pair of top-three finishes.

Coach's Comments
"It was a tough for meet for us today, Montclair came out very strong and although we had a lot of good takeaways from both meets this just reinforces how much more work we have to do. We are looking forward to next weekend when we host two very strong Rowan teams where we will look to improve upon some of the things that limited us today." – Head Coach Adam Schneider.

Up Next
Stevens returns to DeBaun next Saturday, October 12, to battle Rowan.
