HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's swimming team won nine of 14 events Saturday afternoon, January 25, in a 153-108 dual meet victory over Ursinus on Senior Day from the DeBaun Aquatic Center.
The Rundown
The team went 4-for-4 in the 100-yard individual events (and took the top two spots in three of the four events), starting with Velasquez, who took first in the 100 back in 54.34, the team's second-fastest time of the season; Martinek touched second in 56.11.
Cade Cermak and Mikulenas went 1-2 in the 100 breast, Cermak coming from .15 seconds back at the 50-yard mark to win in 1:01.37, just .13 seconds ahead of Mikulenas. In the 100 free, it was Cermak who held off a late charge from Stibor, who finished just .09 seconds behind Cermak's 49.09 after falling .29 seconds behind at the halfway mark. Bove closed out the 100-yard victories with a 52.63 performance in the butterfly, nearly one full second ahead of second place.
After the Ducks earned just six out of a possible 19 points in the 200-yard freestyle,
Edward Platonov won the 200 butterfly in 1:58.21, the only competitor under 2:03.00 in the event, and the team's fast time in the event this year.
Ryan Ward and Emerton went 1-2 in the 200 back, Ward finishing in 1:59.50 and Emerton touching at 2:01.30. Mikulenas and
James Johnson gave the Ducks another pair of top-two finishers in the 200 breast, finishing in 2:17.71 and 2:22.51, respectively.
Top Performers
Stibor ended the day with four top-two finishes, two of those ending in relay victories. Velasquez, Mikulenas, and Bove all finished with at least two top-three individual finishes and a relay win; Ward and Platonov each earned an individual and relay victory.
