Glassboro, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's swim team was edged 140.5-121.5 by Rowan University in their season-opener on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens' top performer was
Angel Velasquez, who opened his senior campaign with three wins. He helped the Ducks capture the opening 200 medley relay in 1:36.58 alongside
Lukas Mikulenas,
Deo Bove, and
Will Stibor, edging Rowan by one-hundredth of a second. Velasquez went on to sweep his individual events, taking the 100 backstroke in 54.41 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:15.26. in the 200-breast, Velasquez edged out Mikulenas, by over a second, with Mikulenas touching the wall in 2:16.41. The senior clipped
Ethan Emerton in the 100-back, winning by a mere .29.
Mikulenas also picked up a win, touching first in the 100 breaststroke at 1:00.70 after holding off Rowan's James Bygott. Bove added a victory of his own, tying for first in the 100 butterfly in 52.62 and later contributing to the second-place 200 freestyle relay that closed the meet in 1:28.57.
Andrew Gaba took third in the 500-free in 5:06.96, with
Patrick Cortelli behind him in 5:07.39. Emerton grabbed a win in the 200-back, touching the wall in 1:59.23. First-years Sebastien Nappi and
Yusuf Tokuz went 2-3 in the 200-free, as Nappi was second in 1:50.72 and Tokuz third in 1:52.28.
First-year
Cooper Moffatt impressed in his collegiate debut, finishing third in the 1000 freestyle (10:19.73) and winning the 200 individual medley in 2:02.03 after closing with the fastest freestyle leg in the field. Rounding out Stevens' top-five marks, senior
Will Stibor sprinted to a win in the 50 freestyle (22.06) and later anchored the 200 freestyle relay that finished just 0.23 seconds behind Rowan, which included Velasquez, Davis, and Bove.
