Split for No. 4 Men’s Volleyball at Baruch in Day One

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEW YORK CITY (February 23, 2013) – The nationally ranked No. 4 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team split its opening matches of the Baruch College Invitational on Saturday against Rivier University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Stevens is now 12-4 on the season and had its eight-match winning streak snapped by MIT in the second matchup of the afternoon.

The Ducks defeated Rivier, 25-16, 23-25, 27-25, 27-25, and was led by 56 assists and six digs from sophomore Kevin Aeckerle (Henrietta, N.Y.). Junior Ryan Seifert (Chicopee, Mass.) also handed in a solid performance with 19 kills in the victory.

Senior Thomas Hannum (Libertyville, Ill.) contributed 15 kills and seven digs with a .480 hitting percentage, while junior David Evans (Penfield, N.Y.) chipped in 12 kills and three service aces.

Other highlights from the triumph were nine kills from senior Jake Modestow (Hampden, Mass.) and seven kills by sophomore Etan Bennett (Rochester, N.Y.).

Stevens hit .315 in the four-set win.

In the second match that snapped the Ducks' winning streak against MIT, 26-24, 25-21, 23-25, 25-23, Evans registered 17 more kills and four aces to go along with seven digs. Aeckerle dished out 43 helpers to total 99 on the day with eight more digs.

Freshman Chris Vaughan (Medford, N.J.) tallied a team-best 13 digs, while Hannum added nine digs, eight kills and two solo blocks.

As a team, Stevens totaled 13.5 blocks which was led by six from Modestow. He also put down five kills.

Sophomore Ian Tyger (York, Pa.) finished the match with nine kills and five total blocks.

The Ducks will be back in action tomorrow at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. against Kean University and Emmanuel College to wrap up the Baruch Invitational.
