SHENANDOAH, Texas (March 22, 2013) – Junior
Simas Jarasunas (Vilnius, Lithuania) of the Stevens Institute of Technology men's swimming team became the first National Champion in the history of the program, winning the 100-yard breaststroke at the 2013 NCAA Division III Championships in Shenandoah, Texas.
Stevens is now in sixth place overall with a team total of 123 points. Kenyon is in the lead with 321.5 and Denison is second with 276. MIT is third (257), Emory is fourth (210) and Johns Hopkins is fifth (200). Forty four institutions have earned points at the 2013 national meet.
Jarasunas touched the wall with a time of 54.57, edging out
Colby Kubat (West Des Moines, Iowa) of St. Olaf College who was second (54.96) by .41 of a second. The junior picked up 20 team points and set a new school-record. The Lithuanian matched his previous school-record with a 55.55 in the prelims, and entered the championship final as the second seed.
The women's swimming program has had two previous individual national champs in current sophomore
Brittany Geyer (Brunswick, Ohio) and graduate
Laura Barito (Arkadelphia, Ark.). Geyer won the 200-yard breaststroke last year and Barito took the 50-yard freestyle at the 2011 championships. As a school, Stevens now has four individual NCAA National Champions.
Senior
John Hu (Oak Harbor, Wash.) tallied a 1:48.60 and finished eighth in the 200-yard butterfly prelims to start the day, earning a spot in the championship final and setting a new school-record in the process. Junior
Shawn Hanak (North Royalton, Ohio) was the Ducks' top finisher in the 100-yard backstroke as his 50.90 put him 23rd, while senior
Greg Charriez (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.) placed 27th with a 51.19.
In the final event of the morning session, Stevens' 800-yard freestyle relay team finished third overall to earn 32 points. Freshman

Wesley Elford (Phoenix, Ariz.), junior
Nick Noga (Oriskany, N.Y.) and senior
Alex Benham (Raleigh, N.C.) turned in a 6:41.48 to set a new school-record by almost three full seconds. The 800-yard free relay does not have a prelim and there are three timed final heats. The same is true for the 1,650-yard freestyle which takes place Saturday.
Hu placed fourth in the 200-yard butterfly final to begin the evening session, performing in a school-record time of 1:47.79 and earning 15 team points. His finish was the second top-five placement in two days to tally a pair of All-America honors.
In total the Ducks set school-records in three events on the day and six student-athletes earned All-America distinction.
Stevens will look to finish the NCAA's strong Saturday on the fourth and final day of competition in Texas.
