HOBOKEN, N.J. (Feb. 8, 2021) – Under the leadership of current Director of Athletics
Russell Rogers, who is in his 21st year in the position, the Stevens Institute of Technology Department of Athletics has risen to unprecedented levels of success.
Under Rogers' leadership, Stevens has finished inside the top 45 in the DIII College Directors' Cup standings 11 consecutive years including a program-best 13th-place finish in both 2010-11 and 2015-16. The Ducks also won the Jostens Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Institution of the Year Award in both 2007-08 and 2012-13, while also finishing as the Collegiate Athletic Administrators of New Jersey DIII Cup Winner in seven of the last 10 years.
The Department of Athletics will look back into the archives to reflect on the development's evolution under Rogers. Each week, key moments will be highlighted that happened "This Week in Stevens History."
The week of February 8-14
Feb. 8, 2015 – Batzli Becomes Fourth Women's Fencer to Reach 200-Win Plateau
In a meet featuring fierce competition such as Johns Hopkins University, Temple University and Brandeis University, Sienna Batzli became just the fourth women's fencer in program history to amass 200 career victories.
In her penultimate competition on Castle Point, Batzli finished the day with eight victories to bring her career total to 204. She would add 12 more wins to her ledger one meet later to give her 216 career wins. Currently, Batlzi has the fifth-most wins of any epee fencer in program history.
Feb. 9, 2020 – Men's Fencing Sets Single Season Program Wins Record
In a historic year for the men's fencing program, the Ducks had a stellar performance on Senior Day with a perfect 4-0 record to push their season win total to 32, breaking the previous record of 31 set in the 2018-19 season.
Stevens knocked off Hunter, Army, Yeshiva and RV NJIT in the Round Robin to move to 32-3 on the year and a perfect 10-0 in MACFA competition. The Ducks would go on to finish MACFA play 15-0 in the regular season and amass 37 total victories to shatter the previous program record.
Feb. 9, 2019 – Wrestling Continues its Dominance, Wins Fifth Straight Centennial Conference Title
Led by individual titles from
Troy Stanich,
Dylan Van Sickell and
Brett Kaliner, the Stevens wrestling team continued its dominance at the Centennial Conference Championship, winning its fifth straight title.
In addition to the three titles,
Akhil Vega,
Robert Gennat and
Joey Borai were all medal winners for the Ducks, who totaled 83 points to become just the second program in conference history to win fifth consecutive conference crowns (Ursinus 2003-07).
Feb. 9, 2019 – Weeks Breaks Weight Throw Record at Valentine Invite
In her fifth and final attempt,
Katie Weeks broke the indoor women's track and field program record in the weight throw with a throw of 17.66 meters at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational.
The throw surpassed the previous record of 17.58 meters set by Stevens Hall of Famer
Alina Duran in 2013 and was the top throw in the Atlantic Region and fifth in NCAA Division III at the time. Weeks, a two-time Empire 8 Indoor Field Athlete of the year, would go on to best her own record a week later with a throw of 18.25m that stands as the current school record.
Feb. 9, 2018 – Li Breaks Program Record with Seven 3-Pointers, Brown Goes Over 1,000 Points in Win Over Alfred
The Stevens women's basketball team made history X2 in a dominant 96-53 victory over Alfred University in 2018 when
Megan Brown recorded her 1,000
th career point and
Christina Li broke the program record for made 3-pointers.
Brown needed four points to reach the milestone coming into the contest and achieved the feat with 50 seconds remaining in the first half. She would go on to add 110 more points in her career to place her inside the top-10 all-time in career points.
Not to be outdone, Li etched her named in the record books by going 7 for 12 from beyond the arc to finish with a career-high 28 points and best the previous record for made threes in a game of six held previously by Mia Molfino, Sarah Gehring and
Erica Guketlov.
Feb. 10, 2011 – Women's Swimming Earns Highest-Ever Ranking in CSCAA Poll
The Stevens women's swimming team made history in 2011 when they achieved their highest-ever ranking in the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of American poll, climbing all the way to No. 6 in the nation.
To earn the ranking, the Ducks grabbed dual wins over Montclair State University, Misericordia University, SUNY New Paltz and Hartwick College while also taking home the team title at the New York University Fall Invitational.
The poll would prove to be spot-on as Stevens went on to finish sixth overall at the 2011 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships, the highest finish in program history.
Feb. 10, 2011 – Men's Volleyball Rallies From Behind to Knock off No. 2 Juniata
Trailing 2-0 heading into the third set against the No. 2 team in the nation, the Stevens men's volleyball team rallied to win three straight sets to knock off Juniata in thrilling fashion.
Stevens dropped the first two sets 16-25 and 21-25 but answered right back by winning sets three and four 25-16, 25-19, respectively. In the fifth and final set, the Ducks rallied once again, rattling off four straight points after falling behind 9-8 to take a 12-9 lead and ultimately win the set 15-12.
SteFan PremDas had a career day for the Ducks, hitting .417 on 36 swings and notching a match-high 20 kills in the win. Setter Brandt Grobeis, meanwhile, directed the offense with 50 total assists while also adding six digs in the win.
Feb. 11, 2015 – Regan Named USTFCCCA DIII Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Amy Regan's impressive Stevens career added another trophy to the case in 2015 when she was named the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete of the year for stellar efforts in the classroom and on the track.
Regan became the first Stevens runner in program history to win the award. She earned the award after winning the 2014 NCAA DIII Cross Country National Championship and producing a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.
Feb. 11, 2006 – Women's Basketball Snaps Mount Saint Mary 64-Game Conference Win Streak
On the road playing against a team that had won 64 consecutive regular season conference games, the Stevens women's basketball team did the unthinkable, knocking off six-time defending Skyline Conference champion Mount Saint Mary College 59-56. It was the first Skyline Conference loss for the Blue Knights in the history of their program and snapped the second-longest streak in NCAA DIII history.
Trailing by eight points with less than 12 minutes to play, Stevens rattled off six straight points in just over a minute to cut the deficit to one. Then, trailing 56-55 with 19 seconds to play,
Dani Dudek put the Ducks ahead with a layup and stole the ensuing inbounds pass and was fouled immediately. She sunk both free throws and sealed the win.
The Ducks were led by Dora Enright who scored 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds as well as Jean Matusiak who added 14 points and four assists.
Feb. 13, 2008 – Farid Becomes Men's Basketball All-Time Leading Scorer and Breaks Career Steals Record on Senior Night
Senior Waleed Farid could not have scripted a better Senior Night as he became the program's all-time scoring and steals leader and broke the school record for steals in a single game in a 69-55 victory over Hunter College.
Early in the second half, Farid picked up his fifth steal to surpass the all-time career record of 218 set by Josean Valasquez from 1995-99. He could go on to add four more in the game to break the single-game record for steals with nine.
As for the scoring record, Farid passed Dan Bronstein's mark of 1,465 career points set from 1982-86 with a layup with 1:31 remaining in the contest. He would add 95 more points in his senior campaign to give him a career total of 1,562 which currently ranks third all-time in program history.
Feb. 14, 2016 – Women's Fencing Captures Second Straight EWFC Title
A year after snapping Johns Hopkins University's five-year run of titles, the Stevens women's fencing team won its second straight Eastern Women's Fencing Conference title after a perfect 7-0 day with wins over Hunter, Yeshiva, Haverford, Vassar, Drew and Johns Hopkins.
Julie McEldoon was named the conference epee fencer of the year while
Amanda Choy,
Julia Yang and
Michelle Drobish were all named First Team All-Conference for their performances. Additionally,
Erin Hatcher, Abby Kay and
Caroleen Chen all earned Second Team All-Conference recognition.
