HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 1, 2021) – Under the leadership of current Director of Athletics Russell Rogers, who is in his 21st year in the position, the Stevens Institute of Technology Department of Athletics has risen to unprecedented levels of success.

Under Rogers' leadership, Stevens has finished inside the top 45 in the DIII College Directors' Cup standings 11 consecutive years including a program-best 13th-place finish in both 2010-11 and 2015-16. The Ducks also won the Jostens Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Institution of the Year Award in both 2007-08 and 2012-13, while also finishing as the Collegiate Athletic Administrators of New Jersey DIII Cup Winner in seven of the last 10 years.

The Department of Athletics will look back into the archives to reflect on the development's evolution under Rogers. Each week, key moments will be highlighted that happened "This Week in Stevens History."

The week of March 1-7
March 1, 2010 – Men's Swimming Captures First-Ever Empire 8 Title
In 2010, the Stevens men's swim program captured what would their first of many (eight to be exact) Empire 8 Conference titles. The Ducks finished the championships with 1,157 team points to cruise to the team title, winning nine of the 20 total events in the meet.

Stevens got individual titles from Alex Benham (500-free, 1,650-free), Matthew Preedy (100-breast), John Hu (200-fly, 200-IM) and Evan Wilson (400-IM) while also winning the 200-medley relay and the 400- and 800-freestyle relays to win the team title. The Ducks would go on to finish in 17th place overall at the NCAA Championships in 2010, the highest team finish in program history at the time.

March 2, 2020 – Men's Indoor Track & Field Wins MAC Championship
Just one season ago, the Stevens men's indoor track and field program made their presence felt in a new conference, taking home the Middle Atlantic Conference title with 121 total points on the second day of competition to vault from fifth to first place.

The Ducks captured gold in three different events and earned an additional six finishes that resulted in either silver or bronze to capture its second indoor title in as many seasons. All totaled, Stevens scored in 14 different events in climbing from fifth place to first. 

First-year student-athlete David Springstead was tabbed as the MAC Co-Rookie of the Year and head coach Lance Harden was named the MAC Indoor T&F Men's Coach of the Year.

March 2, 2017 – Men's Volleyball Earns Victory Over NYU in Top-Five Matchup
In a matchup of two of the top five teams in the nation, the Stevens men's volleyball team won a thrilling five-set match 3-2 against No. 5 NYU inside Canavan Arena.

After winning the first two sets 25-19 and 25-14, the Voilets grabbed sets three and four 25-22, 25-23 to send the match to a fifth set. In the decisive shortened set, the Ducks bounced back for a 15-8 victory to grab the win.

The contest produced the first double-double of David Lehman's illustrious career with 14 kills and 11 digs while Jordan Stuart was extremely efficient, going a perfect 9 for 9 on kills.

March 2, 2013 – Women's Fencing Captures Back-to-Back NIWFA DIII Titles
For the second consecutive year and the third time in four years, the Stevens women's fencing team took home the NIWFA Division III title at the NIWFA Championships. The Ducks took home the silver medal at epee, foil and won bronze at sabre to finish in second place overall behind only Temple University in the championships.

Individually, Juliet Turalski finished in second place at sabre to be the highest overall finisher for the Ducks while Caroleen Chen won bronze at epee and Krystal Perkins earned a fourth-place finish at foil to lead the way at their respective weapons. Overall, Stevens has won a total of seven NIWFA Division III team titles with the first coming in 2010 and the most recent in 2018.

March 2, 2007 – Men's Basketball Topples WPI, Ramapo to Advance to Third Round in First-Ever NCAA Tournament Appearance
The Stevens men's basketball program made history in 2007, not only by winning its first-ever NCAA tournament contest, but also by taking down site host Ramapo College in the Round of 32 to advance to the Third Round for the first and only time in program history.

The Ducks opened the NCAA Tournament with a 68-57 victory over No. 17 WPI thanks to a game-high 19 points from Anthony Passalacqua. They then followed it up with a 69-61 win over the NJAC Champs, led by a historic 27-point, 14-rebound performance by 2013 Stevens Hall of Fame inductee Waleed Farid.

March 3, 2008 – Charles Becomes First Men's Fencer in Program History to Qualify for NCAA Finals
In the 2008 Men's Fencing NCAA Regional Championship, Lowden Charles became the first Stevens men's fencer since regional competition began in 1984-85 to qualify for the NCAA Championship.

Charles, one of only two DIII fencers to make it to the final round of the regional championship, earned an at-large spot in the championships by finishing 10th overall at foil. He would go on to finish in 21st place overall, the highest individual finish by a Stevens men's fencer since Leslie Gee grabbed 15th in 1981-82.

March 3, 2006 – Sanders Becomes First All-ECAC Selection in Indoor Track & Field History for Stevens
In his first season on the track with the Ducks, Will Sanders became the first Stevens indoor track and field athlete to earn All-Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference honors.
 
Sanders finished in eighth place in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:05.35 at the ECAC DIII Indoor Track and Field Championships in 2006. The top eight finishers earned All-ECAC accolades. In addition, Sanders was only the third male from Stevens to compete at any ECAC track and field championship (2001 - Andy DeLiso and Pat Bastien).
 
March 5, 2016 – Women's Basketball Races Past SUNY-Geneseo to Reach Third Round of NCAA Tournament
The Stevens women's basketball program, making its second straight trip to the dance, made its furthest run in the NCAA Tournament in the 2015-16 season, advancing to the Third Round with a 66-60 victory over SUNY-Geneseo one day after dismantling Old Westbury 76-50.

In the victory over Geneseo, the Ducks got 20-point performances from two different sources as Kaitlyn Astel had a game-high 21 points and Miranda Ripken added 20 points of her own. Additionally, Anna Toke was solid on the glass for Stevens, pulling down a game-high 14 boards.

March 6, 2011 – Men's Lacrosse Powers Past No. 18 Springfield Thanks to Seven Goals from Faubert
The Stevens men's lacrosse team earned a decisive 18-8 victory over No. 18 Springfield in a matchup of a pair of top-20 teams in 2011 thanks in large part to a game-high seven goals from senior Brandon Faubert.

With the contest tied at four early in the second period, the Ducks went on a 6-1 run thanks to two goals from Alex Hofritcher and three more from Faubert in less than two and a half minutes to make the score 10-5 and cruise to the double-digit victory.

March 6, 2010 – Pigott's 200th Career Goal Lifts Women's Lacrosse to Triple OT Win Over No. 8 Union
In her final season on Castle Point, Alyssa Pigott became just the second student-athlete in program history to score 200 career goals, netting her 200th in historic fashion. Just over a minute into the third overtime period, Pigott unleashed No. 200 into the back of the net to give the women's lacrosse team a thrilling 11-10 victory over No. 8 Union.

The Ducks trailed by as many as four goals (8-4) in the second half, but outscored Union 7-2 down the stretch and in OT to pick up the victory. In addition to Pigott's historic goal, Stevens also got a free-position score with one second remaining in the regulation from Joey Galligan to send the contest to extra time.

March 7, 2015 – Men's Tennis Topples Nationally-Ranked RPI, Swarthmore in Back-to-Back Contests
The Stevens men's tennis teams took down a pair of nationally ranked opponents in 2015, knocking off No. 38 RPI and No. 27 Swarthmore within one week of each other. The Ducks toppled RPI 7-2 and followed it up with a 6-3 win over Swarthmore.

In the win over RPI, Stevens picked up two doubles victories at lines No. 1 (Matthew Heinrich/Ben Foran) and No. 3 (Charles Drake/Kyle Henry) and nearly swept through the singles matches, winning at every line except No. 4. Six days later, Stevens traveled on the road and pulled off the upset thanks to wins at No. 2 (Heinrich/Foran) and No. 3 doubles (Michael Feldman/Danny Polk) and singles victories at No. 1 (Heinrich), No. 3 (Feldman), No. 4 (Drake) and No. 5 (Polk).

The wins were the first two of six total victories over ranked opponents in the 2014-15 season for the Ducks.

March 7, 2008 – MacWhinnie Places Third at NCAA Championships to Become First NCAA All-American in Program History
In his final NCAA Championship appearance for the Stevens wrestling program, senior Brandon MacWhinnie became the first student-athlete in the history of the program to place at the NCAA DIII Championships, earning a third-place finish at 174 lbs.

MacWhinnie defeated Olivet's Kyle Vanderhyde in the Consolation Bracket Final 12-4 to earn the bronze medal and become the program's first NCAA All-American. He finished his career with a 121-24 overall record and closed his career as Stevens wrestling's all-time leader in falls (41), tech falls (14) and major decisions (30).
