HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 8, 2021) – Under the leadership of current Director of Athletics
Russell Rogers, who is in his 21st year in the position, the Stevens Institute of Technology Department of Athletics has risen to unprecedented levels of success.
Under Rogers' leadership, Stevens has finished inside the top 45 in the DIII College Directors' Cup standings 11 consecutive years including a program-best 13th-place finish in both 2010-11 and 2015-16. The Ducks also won the Jostens Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Institution of the Year Award in both 2007-08 and 2012-13, while also finishing as the Collegiate Athletic Administrators of New Jersey DIII Cup Winner in seven of the last 10 years.
The Department of Athletics will look back into the archives to reflect on the development's evolution under Rogers. Each week, key moments will be highlighted that happened "This Week in Stevens History."
The week of March 8-13
March 9, 2019 – Weeks, Dello Russo Collect All-America Honors at NCAA DIII Indoor Championships
Gina Dello Russo and
Katie Weeks shined in a big way at the 2019 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships, both earning All-America honors for stellar performances.
Weeks opened things up on day one with an eighth-place finish in the weight throw to earn All-America status for the second straight season after finishing in seventh in 2018. She closed her career as a three-time All-American and left the program's as the record holder in the shot put (indoor and outdoor), discuss (outdoor), weight throw (indoor) and hammer throw (outdoor).
Dello Russo, meanwhile, finished as the national runner-up in the 400-meter dash and grabbed seventh in the 200-meter dash to secure multiple All-America honors for the second consecutive season. At this point in her career, Dello Russo is currently at 10-time All-American and is just one shy of matching alumna
Amy Regan's program-record 11 track and field All-America distinctions.
March 9, 2008 – Men's and Women's Basketball Wins ECAC Titles on Same Day
March Madness was good to the Stevens basketball programs in 2008 as both the men's and women's teams won the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Division III Metro Championship for the first time in program history. The men defeated York College 82-54 while the women knocked off top-seeded Montclair St. 57-50.
On the men's side, the Ducks won the ECAC title as the top seed in the tournament, defeating the College of Staten Island 73-47, Brooklyn College 83-74 and York en route to the title. Junior Virgil Gray was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player after producing 18 points and five boards in the championship game to help Stevens finish 23-6 overall on the season.
For the women, Stevens toppled Lehman College, CSI and Montclair State in their path to the title led by 2015 Stevens Hall of Fame Inductee Dora Enright. In the championship contest, Enright willed the Ducks to a victory with a 17-point, 18-rebound double-double while also becoming the program's all-time leading scorer with 1,704 career points.
March 9, 2002 – Barnhart Sets Program Record with Nine Goals in 15-3 Win over Kean
In just her second game on Castle Point, 2011 Stevens Hall of Fame inductee
Valerie Barnhart set a program record with nine goals in a single game to help the Ducks defeat Kean University 15-3. In the program's second year of existence, Barnhart set a record that is still alive to this day.
Still the only player in program history to score nine goals in a game, Barnhart accomplished the feat two more times in her career, once later in the 2002 season and once in 2003 to help put her atop the program leaderboard with 298 career goals.
March 10, 2018 – Kainer Becomes First Men's Track and Field All-American in Program History
Junior
Alex Kainer became the first-ever All-American for the Stevens men's track and field team after taking home fifth place in the 200-meters at the 2018 NCAA DIII Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Kainer ran the second-fastest time of his career, 21.93 seconds, .02 seconds faster than his qualifying time. Two weeks before the 2018 Empire 8 Championships, Kainer was not nationally ranked in the 200, yet completed the season as the fifth-best athlete in the country in the event.
March 10, 2014 – Softball Sets Program Record for Runs, Hits and RBIs in 25-0 Win over Mt. Mary
The Stevens softball team put on a show in a doubleheader sweep of Saint Mary's College and Mount Mary in 2014, defeating St. Mary's 7-0 before setting a program record for runs and hits RBIs in a 25-0 route of Mount Mary.
In the record-setting win over the Blue Angels, the Ducks pounded out 23 hits, 23 RBIs and 25 runs in just four total at-bats before the game ended in a run-rule. Every Stevens student-athlete who had an at-bat in the game produced at least one hit as

Amanda DiLeo and
Gina Schnecker all had multi-hit games.
March 11, 2020 – Bednarski, Conlin Set Program Records in Women's Lacrosse 14-6 Win Over Union
Just one year ago, senior
Kyra Bednarski and sophomore
Meredith Conlin both set program records for women's lacrosse on the same day to lead the Ducks to a 14-6 victory over Union College.
Bednarski, who finished the contest with five goals and six assists, became the program's all-time leader in career assists with 112, passing alumna Liz Mather who totaled 110 between 2005-08. Conlin, meanwhile, caused a total of seven turnovers in the contest to break the program's single game record previously held by five student-athletes, one of which was Conlin.
March 11, 2016 – Regan Wins National Championship in 5,000 and 3,000, Njoku Takes Gold in High Jump as Women's Track and Field Finishes Fourth Overall at DIII Championship
The Stevens women's indoor track and field team only sent two student-athletes to the NCAA Division III Championships, but that didn't stop them from finishing in fourth place as a team overall and winning a total of three national titles.
Amy Regan ran the 5,000-meter run in 16:48.62 and the 3,000-meter run in 9:30.80 to win a pair of NCAA Championships. The time in the 3,000 broke the NCAA Division III meet record and was the second-fastest time in DIII history at the time. Regan would go on to win three more national titles in her career to give her six total.
Njoku, meanwhile, won the national title in the high jump for the second consecutive year by reaching a height of 1.75 meters. The jump matched a season best for Njoku and was .3 centimeters higher than the second place competitor. She closed her career as a two-time national champion and a five-time All-American, all in the high jump.
March 12, 2011 – Lamianski Becomes Top DIII Fencer at NCAA Regional Championship
Men's fencer Dmitri Lamianski was the lone Division III finalist at the 2011 NCAA Regional Fencing Championships, earning a 12-place finish at sabre overall. In qualifying for the event in general, Lamianski was also just the third men's fencer in program history to qualify for regionals four times in his career.
Lamainski's top-12 finish was the third consecutive of his career after he finished in 12th and seventh in his first two years on Castle Point, respectively. His 206 career wins at sabre puts him third all-time in program history at the weapon behind only Nick Miuccio and Pat Panico.
March 12, 2011 – Bridge Becomes First Two-Time All-American in Program History
Ryan Bridge, making his second straight appearance in the NCAA DIII Wrestling Championships, finished in seventh place at 141 lbs. to become the first student-athlete in program history to become a two-time All-American.
After finishing fifth in 2010 and joining Brandon MacWhinnie as one of only two wrestlers to accomplish the feat as an All-American, Bridge finished 4-2 overall in the tournament and posted a 15-3 overall record on the year, with an 8-4 career record in NCAA Tournament competition.
March 13, 2006 – Big Day from Sandt leads Baseball to Upset win Over No. 2 Cortland 12-9
The Stevens baseball team got perhaps its biggest win in program history in 2006 when the Ducks knocked off 2005 national runner-up No. 2 SUNY-Cortland 12-9, handing the Red Dragons one of only nine total losses on the year.
The Ducks were led offensively by Adam Sandt who finished the day 4 for 4 with a double, a triple, three RBIs and three runs scored. The junior finished just a homer shy of the cycle and helped Stevens close out the 2006 trip to Florida with a perfect 5-0 record with wins over a pair of ranked opponents.
