HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 23, 2021) – Under the leadership of current Director of Athletics
Russell Rogers, who is in his 21st year in the position, the Stevens Institute of Technology Department of Athletics has risen to unprecedented levels of success.
Under Rogers' leadership, Stevens has finished inside the top 45 in the DIII College Directors' Cup standings 11 consecutive years including a program-best 13th-place finish in both 2010-11 and 2015-16. The Ducks also won the Jostens Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Institution of the Year Award in both 2007-08 and 2012-13, while also finishing as the Collegiate Athletic Administrators of New Jersey DIII Cup Winner in seven of the last 10 years.
The Department of Athletics will look back into the archives to reflect on the development's evolution under Rogers. Each week, key moments will be highlighted that happened "This Week in Stevens History."
The week of March 22-28
March 22, 2019 – Crouse Takes 13th at NCAA Championship in Rookie Campaign
In his first season on Castle Point,
Wolfe Crouse joined Lowden Charles as the only men's fencing student-athlete to advance to the finals of the NCAA Championship since regional competition began.
Crouse finished the season 13th overall at epee, just one win shy of becoming just the third All-American in program history. The Conroe, Texas, native scored 81 touches on the day and finished 11-12 overall in the meet filled with NCAA Division I competition.
March 22, 2014 – Men's Volleyball Knocks off No. 5 MIT
Ranked No. 10 in the country at the time, the Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball program pulled an upset against fifth-ranked MIT in the regular season United Volleyball Conference finale 3-1 (25-17, 26-24, 18-25, 25-23).
The Ducks had three different players in double-figures in kills as
Chris Vaughan led the way with 17,
Gabe Shankweiler added 14 and
Daniel Smith finished with 12. Additionally,
Kevin Aeckerle racked up 49 total assists and
Dylan Schlosser led the Ducks with 15 digs in the victory.
Stevens would go on to defeat MIT one more time later in the season in the UVC Tournament and advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals.
March 22, 2013 – Jarasunas Becomes Men's Swimming's First NCAA National Champion as Men's Swimming Earns Highest Finishes in Program History
The Stevens Institute of Technology men's swimming program had perhaps its best day in the pool in program history at the NCAA Championships in 2013, finishing a program-best seventh in the country while
Simas Jarasunas became the first National Champion in program history.
Jarasunas won the 100-yard breaststroke in record-breaking time of 54.57 to pick up 20 team points while
Nick Noga (200-free),
Wesley Elford (500- & 1,650-free),
Alex Benham (1,650-free),
John Hu (200-fly, 200- & 400-IM) all also earned points for the Ducks. Additionally, all five relays teams (200-, 400- & 800-free relay, 200- & 400-medley relay) also all finished inside the top-16.
March 23, 2011 – Barito Becomes First NCAA National Champion in Stevens History as Women's Swimming Earns Highest Finish in Program History
Two years prior to the men's best finish in program history, the women had their top performance as they finished sixth in the country as a team and Laura Barito became the first National Champion in the history of Stevens Athletics.
Barito won the 50-yard freestyle at the NCAA Championships with a final time of 22.87 to re-break her own school record she set in the 2010 NCAA's. In addition to Barito's win in the 50-free, she also claimed third in the 100-free while
Louise Moores (100-back & 100-fly) also earned points and the Ducks finished in the top-eight in every relay event to earn the sixth-place finish.
March 23, 2001 – Glick Sets Program Record with 13 Ground Balls in Contest Against Montclair St.
In the program's first year of existence, Lesa Glick set a program record for women's lacrosse that has still yet to be bested to this day.
In a contest against Montclair State, Glick picked up a total of 13 ground balls to set the single-game program record. In her first year on Castle Point, Glick would also go on to set the program mark for ground balls in a single season with 84 to her ledger while also leading the Ducks with 37 goals in the inaugural campaign.
March 24, 2013 – Njoku and Regan Give Outdoor Track and Field Glimpse of Future Success in First Career Outdoor Track & Field Meet
Amy Regan and
Gladys Njoku gave Stevens women's track and field fans a glimpse into the future in 2013 as both competed and took first place in their respective events in their first-ever outdoor event on Castle Point.
Regan topped the field in the 3,000-meter run with a final time of 10:25.08 to best the field by seven seconds while Njoku set a new program record of 1.58-meters (that she would later break multiple times in her career) to earn first place in the high jump. Both would go on to become National Champions in their respective events.
March 25, 2006 – Moreno and Sandt Both Set New Single-Game Program Records and Sota Throws No-Hitter in Rout of Maritime College
In a doubleheader against Martime College, Alex Sota tossed his first career no-hitter and
Gerard Moreno and Adam Sandt both set single-game program records all on the same day as the Ducks won game one 23-1 and game two 19-0.
In the first contest, Moreno actually set a pair of records as she scored five runs and stole five bases to tie records that still stand today. Sandt, meanwhile, hit a pair of triples to become just the third student-athlete in program history to have multiple triples in a single game.
Sota was the story in the nightcap as he finished the job after carrying a no-hitter into the seventh inning two weeks prior against Wentworth. The first-year struck out 14 batters in the no-no and would have pitched a perfect game if not for a wild pitch on a third strike in the second inning.
March 26, 2019 – White Sets Career Saves Record as No. 11 Men's Lacrosse Tops Montclair State
Senior
Carson White made 11 saves in a 13-6 victory over Montclair State to break a 60-year old program record for career saves in 2019 with most of his senior season still to play.
The 11 saves brought White's total to 595 to break the record held by Stevens Hall of Famer Chet Vincentz who made 590 saves between 1957 and 1959. White would go on to rack up 665 career saves and currently sits atop the Stevens record book.
March 26, 2010 – Pettrocelli Twirls First No-Hitter in Program History
The first year of Stevens softball brought many memorable moments, possibly none biggest than Amanda Petrocelli becoming the first student-athlete in program history to toss a no-hitter in the first varsity home game in program history.
Petrocelli blanked NJCU 8-0, dancing out of danger by inducing a pop out in the first inning as an error and a walk put two runners on with two out. The senior would breeze through the next four innings and get a ton of help from her offense to finish the no-no effort in a five inning run-rule.
March 27, 2010 – Men's Tennis Topples No. 9 Skidmore for Seventh Straight Win
The highest ranked team win for the Stevens men's tennis team came in 2010 when the Ducks took down No. 9 Skidmore 5-4 to extend their winning streak to seven matches.
After falling behind 3-0 in the doubles matches,
Chris Rosensteel, Jay Lee,
Arik Zeevy and
Jason Ringstad all won at their respective singles contests to knot things up at 4-4. In the final contest of the day on line six, Piotr Rusinkiewicz clinched a thrilling 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-2) victory to seal the come-from-behind victory for the Ducks.
The games/events noted above are not meant to be a complete listing of Stevens' events on these dates, but a sampling of great moments as determined by the Stevens Department of Athletic Communications.
